In Heyenne Wyoming last night train robbers tried to stop the Union Pacific overland express believed to carry a large sum of money. A rock pile on the tracks was spotted by a pedestrian who was assaulted and robbed by the gang but escaped to raise the alarm. A posse formed and captured one gang member.
Townsend Washington January 22 report from the steamer Alkis arriving five days overdue from Skagaway says Alaska was visited by the severest storm in years. Two Alkis lookouts were nearly frozen to death while the vessel traveled 16 miles. All southeastern Alaska is an ice bound wasteland with fears of heavy loss of life.
Nicholas Ehrson aged 75 died in a furnace on Blackwell's Island at midnight after slipping while carrying a barrel of swill to the crematory. A second elderly man accompanying him was present as the accident occurred and Ehrson was removed only as a burned fragment.
In Scranton on January 22, Frank Janssen, a barber, returned home intoxicated after a ball and fought his wife. He threw a lit lamp at her, the lamp toppled onto the bed, severely burning his wife and her sister and killing his seven year old son. The house burned to the ground.
The Wright, formerly the hospital ship The Aid, sets sail from New York for Manila via the Mediterranean as a despatch boat and store ship for General MacArthur. The voyage begins January 22.
The Hague Jan 22 Kruger departed for Utrecht this morning expecting a stay of several weeks. Crowds gathered at the station to bid him farewell.
A 40 gallon hot water tank with 350 pounds burst atop a large brick oven in J F Morin bakery at 103 to 107 Lowell street around 8 last evening. The tank, which supplied the tenements overhead, had a safety valve but a defect prevented release. Workers Arthur Rochette and Edward Larose heard only a loud report before the explosion.

The Pawtucket Congregational church held its annual meeting showing progress toward debt freedom with 285 dollars remaining in the treasury after expenses. Worcester police report a man named Felix Gallagher was found dead in the shop where he worked. He has two sisters, Kate Donahue and Sarah Brady, who work at the Highland House in this city. The body lies at Worcester morgue awaiting burial arrangements.
In Lynn Monday Judge Sherman sentenced Emil LeBlanc in the Essex county superior court to state prison for a term of three to five years. The defendant faced three counts of breaking and entering in Lawrence and larceny in Lynn, with prior guilty findings on five larceny cases.
Police Commissioner Joseph Healy, a prominent Fall River businessman and civic leader, died Monday afternoon at his home after a period of ill health. Born January 27, 1828, he organized Osborn Mills in 1871 and served as treasurer and agent, later holding roles as insurer and bank director.
