Henry I. Root a Yale sophomore aged 20 was found dead in a snow covered vacant lot in New Haven Conn. A carbolic acid bottle was found near the body and the lips were burned indicating possible suicide after a night walk amid a nervous disorder.
London dispatch reports circulating rumors that Queen Victoria is gravely ill and the royal family summoned to Osborne House. Officials promptly deny the claims as groundless.
A blaze this morning wrecked six tenement houses in Jersey City leaving twenty families homeless. Damage to the properties is placed at twenty thousand dollars.

Victims include engineer Peter Thompson 35 and Bangor brakeman W C Oliver, with two other crewmen.
A sealed verdict favored the defendant was opened in Nashua’s supreme court this morning in the University of Illinois versus Solomon Spalding. The suit sought $70,000 as Spalding’s share of a $600,000 bond securing a fund deposited with Charles Spalding, treasurer of the university and son of the defendant.
Hiawatha Kansas January 18 Mayor Hunter offered his resignation after a majority of city councilmen refused to leave a revival meeting to attend the weekly council session. With no quorum to transact business the mayor sent the sheriff to enforce attendance but council members replied they must remain at the revival.
One hundred fifty students arrested in Kiev for political agitation are expelled to Port Arthur for military service. The punishment will be extended to many more students nationwide as disturbances are anticipated.
London January 18 Gen Kitchener reports Col Grey attacks near Ventersburg routing about 800 Boers. Col Willes’s column attacked north of Standerton by a concentration of the enemy, driven off with severe loss. Our casualties: one killed, fifteen wounded.
Fire swept the Frank Jones Brewing Co. plant in Portsmouth New Hampshire this morning when a magnet sparked by a flint ignited machinery. The explosion tore the roof off the mill and storehouse causing about 15000 in damages though the plant was not crippled.
Brussels January 18 Kruger's private secretary denies circulating reports that Kruger has decided to visit the United States. The denial counters days of speculation about the trip.
Detroit on January 18 reports Gen. Russell A. Alger suffered a relapse and is again confined to bed after getting up too soon from the grip illness. The return to bed follows earlier signs of improvement for the former secretary of war.
Mayor Dimon is eager to begin the city charter revision with a nonpartisan committee. The group includes ex mayor C. D. Palmer and banker E. W. Thomas, with assess or Nathan D. Pratt and councilmen Miskeila and Pearson. The meeting will address funding and expenses, and ex officio aid from the mayor and city solicitor.
At a Boston meeting the Erie Telegraph and Telephone board, led by bankers, assumed control. Charles J. Glidden and Charles A. Grant resigned as president and treasurer. Walter Abbott named treasurer and Grant as auditor. An executive committee of Dexter, Endicott Jr, Foster, Hart and Latta now guides affairs with plans to absorb into American company. Glidden praised loyal staff and a property worth billions, with over 21 million spent in three years. The note outlines dividend policy, subsidiary debt protections with Old Colony Trust, and a 5 percent target dividend while funding extensions. The undivided surplus as of December 31, 1899 stood at 1,429,131.68.
Richard Smith known as Dick Smith stood before Judge Hadley on a breaking and entering charge in a Middlesex street tenement. Witnesses testified Smith entered unbidden and a watch and chain were found on the floor. He was held under $600 bonds for the grand jury. Several other local theft cases were heard with fines, jail and acquittals. Community committee meetings on appropriations accounts and electric wires were announced at city hall.
John J. Mahoney a young man and commercial college graduate is appointed temporary clerk at the city farm and may obtain the position permanently if he desires.
A mid-winter lawn party was held Thursday evening in the vestry of the First Baptist church under Miss Walshs Sunday school class. The space was decorated with evergreen laurel and Japanese lanterns. A character party featured Witch Miss Lottie Flemings Wise Lady Miss Minnie Parker Helen of Troy Miss Martha Maxwell Cleo Patra Miss Marion Warren Queen Elizabeth Miss Lena Parker Priscilla Miss Fannie Kendall Red Riding Hood Miss Ethel Hoagaboom Cinderella Miss Margaret McDonald Minnehaha Miss Piper St. Cecilia Miss Madge Hardy Lady Washington Miss Alice Henderson Portia Miss Cora Hutchinson Miss Adelaide E Noyes read selections. Music by Arthur French piano Frank Hutchinson violin and Charles Delrone cornet complemented the program. Candy ice cream and cake were for sale.

Henry Harris presented a paper on Great Inventions of the Nineteenth Century. Officers elected at a preceding business meeting include Rev. R. A. Greene as president Miss A. E. Edwards as vice president and Miss Josephine Webster as secretary and treasurer.
At the Lowell Hahnemann club monthly meeting the revised constitution and by laws were adopted changing meeting frequency to every other month in the evening and allowing out-of-town physicians as associate members. The trustees of public burial grounds held their first meeting of the year in the mayor's office Thursday night. D. Butterworth and Fred N. Woodies, despite Woodies’s resignation accepted in 1898, returned to power under a Democratic mayor. Woodies was chosen secretary and treasurer as accounts were reviewed and bookkeeping methods changed before adjournment.
Miss Lizzie Morrison who vanished from 305 Chatham Street Lynn has been located in South Acton with friends. She will return to make her home in Lynn. Her mother and police had aided the search since the disappearance weeks ago.
