In New York on January 14, Brooklyn officer William E. Ennis shot and killed his wife and her mother, Mrs Magee, at Mrs Ennis's home after failing to gain entry. He fled, then turned himself in hours later. a magistrate had ordered $10 weekly support prior to the killings.
London dispatch reports Lord Kitchener noting no mention of Gen. De Wet in Johannesburg dated January 13, suggesting optimism for surrounding De Wet. Since Zeerfonten disaster, British columns have pressed, armored trains blocked crossings, and Kitchener supplies remounts. In separate notes, Bruce Hamilton pursued Boers near Knapdaar, capturing 32, four hundred trekkers alerted, and stock seized as Botha escaped.
Arthur Pue Gorman was elected U.S. senator to succeed George L. Wellington with a total vote of 68 to 50 for Jackson. In Annapolis on January 14, the result followed a regional contest. The note mentions a dressmaking class meeting at the YWCA for registration and a preliminary task with Miss L. L. Davis as instructor.

Port Townsend Wash Jan 14 residents of Whidby Island are excited by a headless body found on a beach near Fort Casey. Earlier a headless body and a severed head were discovered, with clothing removed. Authorities suspect murders occurred elsewhere and bodies were dumped at sea, washing ashore with tides. A witness who found multiple heads says another body vanished before reporting.
Father Kruszka of Ripon travels to Racine to join Father Pitass of Buffalo in forming a committee. They will nominate a layman to join them and present the petition to the Propaganda, led by Cardinal Ledochowski, then to Pope Leo. The request calls for a bishop coadjutor for every archdiocese with over 80,000 Polish Catholics, envisioning seven appointments in Milwaukee, Chicago, Buffalo, New York, Detroit, Baltimore and St. Paul.
Grand Isle county court opens its January term with Antonio Coangelo charged in the murder of John Julian at Alburgh. Prosecutors allege Julian’s body, with a bullet wound to the head, was found on a Central Vermont track. Coangelo admits being with Julian but claims he walked away before Julian’s intended Boston voyage.
Gov N C Murphy of Arizona and Gov Otero of New Mexico travel to Washington via Chicago to press for admission of their territories as states. Murphy claims territorial governance rights and notes smaller Mormon population of 12,000 as industrious citizens who no longer practice polygamy.
Notice served on the Illinois Steel branch of U S Steel demanding from 65000 to 75000 dollars to be paid into Illinois treasury under the foreign corporation act for privilege of doing business in the state. Local officials declined to pay, arguing the Illinois corporation remains an integral part of the parent company.
Chicago faces a rare pause as night schools shut for the term amid strained finances. Attendance averages about 4471 with 200 teachers across 20 planned schools, costing roughly 50,000 dollars. Public day schools may also face closure in the ten month term if finances do not improve.
Houston January 14. Southern Pacific plans to mobilize 600 to 1000 immigrant agents from North and East. Their task is to persuade home seekers to move to Louisiana and Texas and to guard them against land speculators.
J P Withers, former president of the American National Bank of Beaumont, Texas, was arrested in Kansas City on forgery charges involving notes and stock. He contends no shortage exists and says the probe was instigated by a rival banker. bank officials claim the shortage was covered and the case is being reviewed by authorities.
Captain Henry Olsen and Pete Wallace drifted for 17 days on a capsized gasoline schooner named the Belle off Santa Barbara California. Olsen was rescued near Goleta after Wallace disappeared, both men from San Pedro had left port 17 days earlier. Olsen, barely alive, believes Wallace perished after sliding from the boat three days earlier. He is expected to recover from the ordeal.
L. T. Singer of Brooklyn dominates the state century event by riding the most centuries in the year. He earned 19 doubles 9 triples 2 quads 2 quints and a sextuple, plus the first national century medal and the second national mileage medal with 19292 miles. Spencer W. Stewart of Brooklyn took the state mileage medal with 22038 miles and also earned the national mileage medal and second national century medal with 101 runs.
Boston January 12 report says Thomas W Lawson Jr will accept Fire Commissioner Scannell of New York's challenge for a race between Boralma and The Abbot. E I Smathers of New York to run in Lord Derby series. Lawson’s representative will meet Scannell and Smathers reps in New York to fix terms.

James Burns told Judge Hadley today about an assault he says occurred two nights ago. He claimed to have reported it to a deputy who cannot locate the attacker, while Burns vows to keep the assailant behind bars with a heavy stick for protection.
Mr Proctor F Goodale died this morning at 19 Robinson court aged 71. Born in the city he worked in the Bleachery for 58 years. He is survived by one brother Cal Goodale and was a brother of the late William Goodale.
James Stuart Murphy traveled to Barnstable jail in response to a telegram from Miss Jane Toppan. She desires Murphy as junior counsel and has asked Chief Justice Mason to appoint him. Murphy confirms he will remain with Miss Toppan as long as she desires, regardless of other appointments.
Eliza Powers in Albion street caused a fire by throwing a lit lamp at Catherine Hackett after a domestic dispute over guests and separation from her husband. The landlord stopped the blaze as both women faced court. Powers’ threat case continued for one month with bond to keep peace.
London Jan. 14 William Fife of Fairlie on the Clyde will design and build Sir Thomas Lipton s next America s Cup challenger the Shamrock III Plans were finalized at a Lipton advisers conference with Fife accepting the commission George L Watson will assist by supplying Shamrock II data and tank experiments Fife will start design as soon as current boats begin the British season aiming for a spring 1905 readiness.
London judges deny H St John Dix appeal. Extradition to the United States upheld for embezzling bank funds at Whatcom Washington. Dix remanded to Bow Street police. Court orders extradition papers to state charge as embezzlement only.
