Belfast January 14 The White Star liner Oceanic the largest ever built was launched at Harlan and Wolff yard this morning. The ship measures 704 feet in length and registers over 17000 tons bringing a new record for passenger liners.
The Melrose police investigated the deaths of Michael O Connell of Wakefield and Alfred Estey of Bethel Me found in a freight car at Melrose late Thursday night. The car door had been fastened trapping them inside. The car had spent two days in Edgeworth where about half its contents potatoes were sold. O Connell helped Estey sell and care for the potatoes. It is thought a railroad man may have closed the door as the car was moved from Edgeworth to Melrose leaving the door ajar. A stove, axe and crowbar were in the car but no escape attempt was found. The bodies were found by O Connell s son and were sent to Wakefield Friday afternoon.
The ambulance corps met at the armory last night with Lieut. R. E. Bell presiding and elected Harry Richardson George Jaques and Joseph Farrell as sergeants. Bell announced training in hospital corps duties alongside regular ambulance instruction. A vote of thanks was given to Fred H. Pearson for two photographs of the division displayed in their rooms. A collation followed the meeting.
A letter from Eugene L. Hannon of Westbrook Maine asks Lowell police to locate his brother Irving Hannon once housed at 64 Schafer Street. Described as nearly six feet tall light complexioned blue eyed and 28 in February he worked as a shoe laster before vanishing with the Portland last November.
Grave fears surround a Casco Maine man presumed aboard the Portland which sank in a November 27 1898 gale. He had been traveling for a patent invention and used Lowell as a temporary base. His parents, worried for months, seek any information about his whereabouts and last contacts.

The event will be informal with social features as volunteers reflect on months of hard work and report on medical etiquette challenges and the city’s aid efforts.
Lowell Mass January 13 1899 letter from Alderman Dimon to the Courier praises Miss Brennan as assistant clerk in the State aid office. He notes the need for an experienced woman in handling women applicants and indicates willingness to help with any civil service fine. He adds he is drawn into the matter by public notice.
The Lowell Mail defends Miss Brennan assistant superintendent of State aid, calling removal attempts under civil service rules harmful to civil service. It praises her honesty and efficiency, citing relief aid work with soldiers’ funds and warns against sanctioning action to oust her.
William Thompson of Lowell, employed by Daniel Gage, was crushed to death by a falling tree while logging above McLaughlin's farm in Nashua this forenoon. He lived at 14 McFarlin Avenue with his wife and children. The body was moved to Tyngsboro and then Lowell. The accident occurred around 10 o'clock.
Frank Humphreys, an employee of Daniel Gage, slipped while unloading baled hay in a Pawtucket Streetstable and fell to the floor below. He struck his head, sustaining concussion and a sprained ankle, was taken home to Ellingsburgh and Wilder streets in an unconscious state, with hopes of recovery uncertain as of the afternoon report.
Patrick Geelon was arraigned before Judge Pickman on embezzlement charges after taking two whitewash brushes from John J. Burns on December 20. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to two months in jail. Six drunks were reported, with several men fined or taxed for minor offenses. Asa Walker, released after 20 days for drunkenness, was arrested again but allowed a trial and release after promising to leave the city.
Services were conducted at Talbot Memorial chapel in Lowell Cemetery with Rev. C T Billings officiating. Dana, who died in Syracuse New York, had lived with her brother George E Dana of Whitman and Baines Manufacturing for over two decades. She taught at Edson and public schools earlier, leaving two sisters in Lowell and Boston. Other obituaries noted include Mrs Mary C Mahoney, 23, Garfield colony member, and Mrs Sarah Simpson 65, wife of Thomas W Simpson, with funeral plans to follow. Mary J Commerford, 50, died at 369 Adams Street, survived by three brothers and a sister, tied to St Patrick’s parish.

A special meeting of the Trades and Labor Council will be held at Building Laborers hall on Middle street Sunday at 2.30. A representative from the Boot and Shoe Workers union of Marlboro will address the gathering, with General Organizer Cowper of the American Federation of Labor also in attendance.

Funeral services were held for Nellie Sexton at St Patrick's Church with Fr Mullin officiating at 2 pm yesterday. Bearers included Peter Sexton James Carroll Daniel Powers and Charles Casey. Burial followed at St Patrick's Cemetery with Molloy in charge.
The marriage of Charles Bull and Miss Mary Fitzgerald occurred Thursday night at the parochial residence of Immaculate Conception church with Rev William D Joyce officiating. Rose Lee served as matron of honor and Michael Lee as best man. The bride from Mill Village, Nova Scotia, came to Lowell and kept the trading house at 27 Kirk Street. The groom, a carpenter employed by John W Greenlaw of 29 Middle Street, received a $50 check from the employer. The couple will reside at 32 Second Street starting January Tuesdays.
William Ruckledge receives war department notice that his son William D. Ruckledge's body is en route to New York from Cuba. He plans to arrange in Lowell for arrival and burial with mayor Crowley to assist.
Mr and Mrs A Moore of Moore street welcome a baby boy born Wednesday morning. Mr and Mrs W King of West Newton MA celebrate the birth of a daughter.
In the city deaths occur with Mary Murphy at 40 years from Corporation hospital and James A. Holmes aged 25 in Tyngsboro, bodies sent by Undertaker O Donnell. An engine accident at the power station forces partial electricity shutoff. Church events include St John s Bishop Lawrence will preach and confirm at St John s church tomorrow evening, services at Eliot church and a Prof Ryder from Andover to preach, while Rev Dr Kingsbury of Have Congregational church is to Cuba for missionary work.
