Telegraphic report from Greenfield says John O Neil, 26, was arrested at his Shelburne Falls home on suspicion of murdering Mrs Hattie E McLoud the prior Friday evening. He pleaded not guilty and is described as a man of dissolute habits and a common laborer.
In Canton Ohio on January 12, rumor connects Hon. Charles E. Smith editor of the Philadelphia Press and former minister to Russia with the treasury secretary portfolio. No authoritative statement has been issued, but the chatter receives unusual emphasis.
In Naugatuck Connecticut on January 12 John Johnson aged 50 suffered severe injuries at the Goodyear metallic rubber shoe factory. His arm was caught in a calendar in the grinding room, his left hand torn off and several fingers on the other hand amputated.
A magazine of the Pennsylvania Torpedo Company at Shamokin was blown this morning. A number of persons were killed and no further particulars are available yet.
Fire at J. F. Sprague law office in Monson Maine early today swept through a four story office building causing about 10000 dollars in losses. The blaze spread rapidly and the structure was destroyed with no immediate report of injuries.
Horace L. Peters died at noon in Lawrence aged 51. He served as treasurer of the Treat Hardware Company and was a director in several banks.
Washington January 12 original pension awarded to John D Pedrick of Lowell with an increase and Henry M Mills original pension for a widow Margaret Elliott.
Portland January 10 One petition to the Legislature will ask that Brunswick be set off from Cumberland county and annexed to Sagadahoc. Heaviest taxpayers claim Brunswick lacks public funds and county offices. Geographical proximity to Path favors joining with Sagadahoc to balance counties. Western Cumberland delegation will oppose.
In St John New Brunswick an inquiry into the Donaldson liner Warwick wreck on Murr Ledge heard a telegram from Light House Inspector Kelly claiming the Gannett Rock light was not in order the night of the disaster. Officers allegedly distributed liquor and continued drinking before impact, a claim the captain denied. Two sailors testified the light was functioning while the captain said he mistook a fixed light for a flash.
Nearly a hundred members of St Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Chicopee, Massachusetts, have decided to form an independent Polish church after discontent with their priest. The group consists of local Poles inspired by a breakup over parish leadership.

The Baltimore glass company’s works recommenced full-time Monday morning after idle status since June, providing employment to 200 workers. A separate Brooklyn fire destroyed a 200 foot long building and hay contents valued with losses at $5,000 for the structure and up to $50,000 claimed by William C. Bloomingdale. Nathan R. Phelps won $13,000 in a verdict against the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad for leg injuries from a 1893 accident. Maine lawmakers slated to consider turning the Portland school for the deaf into a state institution with the state owning the buildings and appointing a governing board.
The 21st annual business meeting of the Central Congregational church in Chelmsford was held on Monday evening January 11. Officers elected included Josiah Fletcher as moderator and A. B. Woodworth as clerk. Minutes covered previous meetings and the ordination of Rev. E. C. Bartlett who announced resignation to take effect January 31, 1897.

Five drunks appeared in Police court. Manning and Mack fined $1 each, Cronin $10, Kennedy and Clark six months in jail. Cronin guilty of unlawfully taking a team, fined $15. Connors fined $15 for stealing a keg from St Charles hotel. Boyce 13 awaiting continued case Jan 15. Belanger held for Superior court on breaking and entering. Ryan and Mine discharged after assault case.
The union auxiliary to the Woman's Board of Missions meets in High Street church vestry tomorrow at 3 PM. Miss Abbie Child of Boston will lecture on her recent China trip. Child, daughter of Hon. Linus Child, is a noted speaker from this city.
A funeral mass was celebrated for Marie Berger at St Josephs church this morning at 9 oclock. Rev Frs Emard Nolin and Marion officiated. Arrangements were directed by Undertaker Archambault. Burial took place in St Josephs cemetery at East Chelmsford.
Maria F Green died at her Carlisle home Sunday aged 85 years and 13 days. The obituary notes her long life and residence in Carlisle.
Jeremiah Crowley knows little about the Rooster steal. Miss Gertrude Edmund will address the Primary Teachers association about Motor Training at High School hall this afternoon at 4 o'clock. A kettle oil fire caused $100 damage to Polley Bros blacksmith shop on Fletcher street yesterday at 2 pm. Brooks's mill fire brigade put it out. An overheated chimney caused $190 damage at William Cogger's house 33 Concorde street last night at 11:30. High street fire company extinguished the blaze.
