Salem January 7 Judge Sherman re sentences Clarence Murphy ex teller of the Salem Savings Bank to nine years and eleven months in the state prison. Murphy had been convicted of embezzlement and originally sentenced in May 1896 to not less than ten nor more than fifteen years.
St Albans Vermont January 7 Governor Smith formally appointed Benjamin Fifield of Montpelier as successor to the late Senator Justin Smith Morrill. Fifield, a renowned Vermont lawyer and former representative, was nominated by convention which backed Garfield for President.
In Madrid on January 7 General Weyler former captain general of Cuba held a banquet for 14 generals and admirals along with other high officials. Toasts urged national regeneration and army and navy reform, with guests expressing hope Weyler would soon assume power.
Philadelphia report states H Wurster of New York, a telegraph operator for the Philadelphia and Reading road, was murdered early today. His head was crushed, the office rifled, and the body left at his desk after a violent struggle. Investigators inspect the scene for clues.
Washington January 7 Representative Dingley is weaker this morning. He gained considerable rest during the night and was able to take nourishing food. Doctors fear his extremely enfeebled condition could cause his heart to fail.
Baltimore January 6 1900 an announcement of interest to the South and to thousands of men connected with growing and selling cotton states that John E Searles will devote his entire time to handling cotton business and related aims for far reaching impact in the trade.
John E. Searles withdraws from active duties at American Sugar Refining and Weston National Bank to focus on a long identified investment in expanding cotton handling and marketing. He has led the American Cotton company which pioneered round baling and will push economic gains from new systems to cut costs for selling the South's cotton to mills.
Washington January 6. Representative Nelson Dingley of Maine has taken a marked turn for the worse after a week of pneumonia. Although lung improvement and reduced cough occur, fevered weakness and systemic poisoning threaten recovery. Delirious at times, he spoke of tariff speeches and was conscious only when aroused. Doctors warn a radical change is needed soon.
Cleveland January 6 James K McKinstry general manager of the Cleveland Telephone company says that after absorbing all Bell telephones in Michigan he believes all Bell companies nationwide will eventually consolidate into one organization. The Erie Telephone company controls Bell interests in Minnesota Texas Arkansas North Dakota South Dakota Michigan and Cleveland. He cites economy and compares to the earlier Western Union merger, noting no official knowledge but a natural tendency toward unification.
Chief Justice William Chambers presented a draft pact from Malietoa and Mataafa on December 19 to settle the Samoa king election. Malietoans signed. Mataafans refused. Due to threats on the chief justice, the U S and British consuls issued protection proclamations. Reported that British and German ships may intervene if trouble arises.
Montpelier Vermont January 6 Governor Smith tendered the vacant United States senatorship from Vermont to Hon B F Fifield of Montpelier. The offer was made at St Albans yesterday and Fifield asked for time to consider before answering.
Telegraphic orders from Secretary Alger direct movement of the 1300 men and officers of the Fourth U S Infantry. They will depart January 15 from New York aboard the Sheridan or Mohawk, sailing for Manila via the Suez Canal.
Havana marks King’s holiday with business houses closed while American offices stay open. Public offices in Havana remained open despite the city observing the holiday.

A bold attempt was made to rob the Phenix National Bank in Phenix Illinois early this morning. The bank sits on Main Street opposite the Phenix House, in a brick building nearby. Local authorities investigated the break in and looked for clues about the intruders.
In police court Judge Pickman freed two of eight drunks, fined one dollar others jailed one to two months and one year in the workhouse. Thomas Cox faced assault threats. court found him not guilty but ordered peace terms with his wife. Five youths charged with breaking into Eliza Broomfield’s home were kept in $100 bail until next Friday. A man named Thomas McNally for snowball assault had his case continued to January 13.
Judge Holmes sustains verdict for plaintiff in Frank Hardiman vs John H Wholtey from Sussex. A horse kick caused injuries after a wagon got stuck and the animal, under rough treatment, reacted while the plaintiff stood on the sidewalk. The court overruled exceptions and left the $392 verdict in place.
The body of Daniel H. Murphy who died intestate in Lynn was brought to Lowell at noon and buried in the Catholic cemetery by Undertaker J. F. O'Donnell. Reports say he left no Lowell brother. an uncle in the city once owned substantial property later left to Murphy in Lynn. His Lowell holdings included an estate on Dumner Street purchased by Percy Parker. Murphy had lived in Billerica twenty years earlier before moving to Lynn, amassing a fortune if rumors hold. Aunt Mrs. Michael Harrington of Billerica met the body at the northern depot. funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church in Lynn.
The Pullman Palace Car company showcased its magnificent passenger train model, remembered from the World's Fair in Chicago and later displayed in Atlanta Nashville and Omaha. By special arrangement the Pennsylvania Railroad has secured this model train for its personal exhibition.

At the adjourned annual meeting on Friday night Pawtucket Congregational church elected officers for the coming year. Dr J J Colton is clerk and treasurer, C Arthur Richardson superintendent of the Sunday school, A L Warren assistant, Justice Richardson librarian, Carl Batchelder and Arthur C Varnum assistants, Daniel Warren Sunday school treasurer, Mrs Co F Miles secretary. The usual Sunday school teachers and committees were appointed.
Members of the English literature class learn that study books have arrived and are for sale at the rooms. Those present Thursday evening anticipate pleasure and profit from Chaucer studies taught by Miss Knott. Those absent due to the week of prayer are advised to join by next Thursday evening.
