Erie Telegraph and Telephone stockholders will meet in New York next Wednesday to authorize mortgage of property and franchises to secure debt from recent extensions and improvements. They will ratify a joint-use agreement with Postal Cable Texas, appoint a finance committee, and amend by laws as needed. The move aims to raise funds via notes and possibly stock or bonds, with two thirds consent required by New York law and near unanimous support sought for Jan 9 meeting.

A blaze last evening in Col J W Bennett’s building at 564 Middlesex Street caused substantial damage estimated at 1500 dollars or more. The fire started in the carpenter shop, spread to two offices, and required over an hour and a half to subdue with a second alarm due to a rekindled flame on the roof. Water damage extended to the cellar while the cause was traced to a live coal left by a plumber and a frozen water pipe thawed too late.

George W Howard was arrested in New York on a bigamy charge, with reports he wed Ella Hawkes in Brooklyn as his third marriage while records show a Cambridge ceremony with Kay in August 1890 and a son born 13 months later. The Cambridge and Red Beach families, plus a possible first wife, complicate whether the Brooklyn marriage is valid.
A broken cylinder head on a Wilmington train leaving Boston at 6 14 p m caused a major tie up on the Boston and Maine Southern division. Passengers on the 7 30 p m to Lowell reached Lowell about 9 p m as trains ahead were delayed. A relief engine moved the disabled engine to the shop and a new engine took its place. Travel resumed an hour and a half later amid long congested lines north of North Somerville and East Cambridge, delaying Boston mail destined for residents and delaying pouch shipments until nearly midnight.
Thaddeus C. Little faced illegal Cohabitation charges after the bigamy count was dropped. A pretrial held in Boston court found no valid marriage by Rev. James F. Allen and a forged signature surfaced. Little was held in $1000 bail for trial tomorrow with the case reset for Saturday on the new charge.
