In a morning blaze at C. H. Raymond’s house on Third Street two women died and two more women and a man are expected to die from their injuries. Mrs Underwood, sister of Mrs Raymond, leaped from the second story and was killed upon impact. Harriet Fee perished in the flames. A suburb collection of pictures and tapestries was destroyed.
William Steele former cashier of the Chestnut Street National Bank in Philadelphia was sentenced to six years and six months in prison and a $300 fine for conspiracy with late president William Singerly. He was convicted of making false entries and reports on the bank’s condition.
Berlin authorities acquitted Frank Knaas of New York on a lese majeste charge after he referred to William as a sheepshead, finding him intoxicated at the time of the remark.
Chicago authorities report Michael Rollinger an Austrian cook being charged with murdering and partially cremating his wife to seize her property and wed another woman, signaling a Luetgert like case in Chicago.
John Howell aged 74 died today at Springfield. Born in England he was one of the six hundred famed in the Balaklava charge and also a Civil War veteran.
Mr Frederick L Diman died after stepping onto a rail line as an inbound train struck him at Arlington station while he attempted to board a Concord bound train. Conflicting accounts link the mishap to late schedules and crowding as officials investigate.
Mrs Bridget Devlin about 60 fell at her home at 4 Everett Street Monday night, breaking her right arm and injuring her head and shoulder. Ambulance took her to St John’s Hospital for treatment this morning.
Rev Michael Ronan pastor of St Peter's church marks the 25th anniversary of his ordination with semi private exercises. He celebrated mass at 8 o clock in the morning to begin the observances.
A noon Mass drew a large parish congregation with Fr. Ronan as celebrant. Afterward a short reception followed the mass. Dinner was served and Fr. Ronan hosted clerical friends, many from out of town, during the meal.
A young woman is said to be seeking 25 cents or a doll for the women's branch of the Peoples club. The club states this is unauthorized as its Christmas work is done without begging and no gifts are solicited from the public. Club work is carried out by girls in the Swan building club rooms.
Miss Harriet Wood resigns as sub librarian after long service. Albert G. Trull to fill the position and books will be at his house with public access promised. The trustees urge all to contribute antiquarian relics for display and promote local culture and patriotism.
The Day nurseries at 64 Kirk street and First street Centralville host Christmas gatherings Saturday December 24 afternoon and evening with trees gifts for children and supper for children and mothers. Donations of toys fancy articles or supplies for the table are urged and may be left at either nursery during the week.
In Police Court Fisher J Keefe received four months jail, Stewart sent to the State farm, Farley jailed four months for larceny. Carney fined five dollars for larceny. Allen and Hannafin fined ten dollars each for assault and battery. Dr OConnor, known as Roger, a famed Dartmouth pitcher, has moved to Bellows Falls VT to practice. Jeremiah C. Kittredge, 51, a respected Brookline writer and real estate worker, died on Washington street after illness. Born in Boston December 13 1847, he lived in Brookline since 1889, authored Library works and plays, traveled widely, and belonged to the American Library Association Bostonian Society and Thayer Association. He leaves a widow and two daughters.
Thomas McLaughlin longtime Franklin hotel proprietor in Lowell and renowned New England horseman died at his South Nashua farm after a yearlong illness. He was about 56 and had welcomed many riding visitors, often entertaining friends royally despite his declining health. Known as Tom to intimates, he expressed willingness to end his struggle, death arriving after a long sickness.
A string of funeral services across Kinsman street Oak street and Lowell cemetery marked yesterday as several families mourned. Services were led by Rev Fr McKenna Rev C T Billings Rev M J Leonard and Rev Dr E T Curnick with bearers including Coburns Fagan and Green among others. Floral tributes named Our Willie Nephew Cousin and Pilgrim commandery highlighted the ceremonies. Burials occurred at Catholic Lowell and Edson cemeteries while attendance ranged from large to substantial. A Pawtucket church building committee reported steady fundraising as heat questions remain unresolved.
