Frederick L Diman well known Arlington music teacher and Philharmonic conductor died after being struck by a train while attempting to board in Arlington today at 8 30 am. He was about 40 with a wife and two children. Diman led Arlington and regional musical groups since 1893 and was highly regarded as a conductor and teacher with ties to Kirk Street Lynn and Concord. The accident ends a prominent local musical career and community leader.
Commander Mori, en route to San Francisco to assume command of the Chitose, says the United States expansion policy has strong Japanese support for sentimental and commercial reasons. He ranks Dewey with Admirals Ito and Nelson, calling him a great naval officer and a general and statesman.

London reports the Midland railway company ordered 20 freight engines from Philadelphia and New York. Due to the engineers' strike English firms cannot meet new orders, leaving production capacity constrained and firms unable to cope with demand.
In Chillicothe Ohio on December 18 two men Elmer Butler age 20 and George Butler age 138 were found guilty of manslaughter for the murder of a young girl. They face penitentiary time as the verdict was delivered today in the local court.
An advertiser claims catarrh can be permanently cured by Hood's Sarsaparilla which purifies the blood and rebuilds tissues. It urges use before the disease worsens and touts Hood's Pills for indigestion at 25 cents. It proclaims Hood's Sarsaparilla as America's Greatest Medicine and lists a price of $1.
Col Weaver issues full mustering orders for the Sixth regiment to begin physical examinations January 2 1899 at home stations. Discharge certificates final statements and descriptive lists must be prepared by January 12 and all personnel discharged January 22. Quarters arranged with Massachusetts armories during muster and medical certificates forwarded to the chief mustering officer. Updates include hospital mentions and staff movements alongside obituaries and local notices.

Funeral services will be held at his late residence 62 Fairmount street on Wednesday December 21 at 2 30 p m. Burial is private. Fielding Mrs Julia B Fielding widow of the late Josiah B Fielding will be buried from Talbot Memorial chapel at the Lowell cemetery Tuesday morning December 24 at 10 30 o'clock. Friends invited to attend without further notice. Pierce Lizzie T Pierce widow of Charles H Pierce aged 36 years 11 months and 18 days died Sunday evening at her home 119 Fulton street. Funeral services at the home 118 Fulton street Tuesday at 1 30 p m. Friends invited.
