New York reports the cotton market opened with a loss as cables fell below expectations and receipts were heavy, but demand at the lower level soon steadied prices near last night’s closes. Active trading followed with a broad rebound and narrow fluctuations.
Boston reports the U S cruiser Des Moines begins a second official trial over the Cape Ann course after a gale last week. Conditions were modestly better with a west wind as the naval board and Fore River builders oversee the test aiming for contract speed of 16.5 knots on a 66 knot course.
Chicago reports that the Allied Printing Trades council has seated delegates from a newly formed union of press feeders. With the emblem restricted to fully union shops, about 800 printing offices in the city rely on 2600 press feeders. The new union is said to have 50 members.
Charles L. White and William Cleff, executive board members of the electrical workers union, were arrested in Chicago on December 5. They are charged as parties to a conspiracy to obstruct the course of justice by hindering the prosecution of John Gallagher, a picket, and Henry Pelkus, a politician.
A burglary at the Madison avenue home of Douglas Robinson, brother-in-law of President Roosevelt, reportedly stole valuable silverware worth several thousand dollars. Police denied the theft, delaying public notice to aid investigations. Entry came via an areaway door left open by a servant, with a sideboard full of silver carried away.
A massive early December blaze northeast of San Bernardino, California, roared through the Brookings Lumber Company timberland destroying 4 to 6 million feet of lumber and many cottages at Fredalba Park. The fire, driven by a strong north wind, consumed thousands of acres of prime standing timber but is not yet under control and mill losses are capped around 100000 dollars.

In Sacramento on December 5 the Nicola case revealed Amodeo Nicola likely fell victim to the Brooklyn Mafia. He handed a threatening Italian letter to a fellow passenger before shooting himself near Milton Station, and the letter was included in an Oakland division report. The jury ruled death by own action.
Cripple Creek Colorado December 5 Judge W P Seeds of the district court releases a signed statement denying unfounded charges in interviews credited to Gov Peabody and Attorney General Miller. He also says no habeas corpus releases occurred for charged prisoners and that trials are scheduled for the first day of the February term.
New York December 5. Virginia L. Thornton a young artist was found dead early today in the bathroom of her East Sixteenth Street apartments. She died from gas asphyxiation caused by a disarranged heating apparatus tube while preparing her bath. She had recently come from Lexington Kentucky where her brother resides.
William T. Patten, Republican candidate for Purchasing Agent, touts a twenty year career as a butcher and grocer who built his own Soursmen business through hard work and honesty. Supporters urge voters to back a self-made, fair dealing candidate with a record of serving all.
Leopold Mambourg former secretary of the Federation of Window Glass Companies aims to unite independent and cooperative plants in Indiana to challenge the American Window Glass Trust and Federation groups. A conference is set for next Monday in Muncie to organize the plan with Columbus Ohio ties. Production from Indiana plants would be sold from Muncie.

The bill bans perquisites, enforces penalties, and requires no strikes or lockouts while pending investigations. Decisions would be final, with parties resuming prior relations until resolved.
Boston December 5 Judge White concluded his instruction to the jury in the Wong Chung and Char lie Chinn murder trial. Jurors were told to return separate verdicts for each defendant and may find murder in the second degree or manslaughter or acquit. They may convict one and acquit the other even though the indictment alleges acting in concert.
Dr. E. G. Blinn, arrested in a sensational November case at his sanitarium, allegedly agreed with detectives in disguise to perform an operation for $500. An error by a police magistrate reportedly kept his $1,000 bond active after a hearing, legally freeing him to leave the state.
A U S court in Detroit extended a temporary injunction preventing State Game Warden Charles Chapman and Deputy Brewster from hindering U S Fish Commission operations. The ruling delays the final hearing in a suit over the arrest of S P Wires, superintendent of a government fish hatchery, reported from Grand Rapids.

The F. F. Avery Automobile company's building in Columbus burned today causing about 60000 dollars in damage. Thirty automobiles stored in the building were destroyed.
Wm H Nichols 21, of Co D Fifth Infantry US Army stationed at Plattsburg barracks, faces first degree murder charges for shooting Gussie Montazzi, an Italian, who died after a fight at Hotel Savoy. Preliminary examination concluded. Nichols held in Clinton county jail until spring. born Frankfort Kentucky, enlisted January 29 1908, Philippines service.
London reports Charles Allen, noted American criminal, re-arrested at Pentonville as he left prison. Charged with a 1893 Springfield Illinois post office robbery, he was taken to Bow Street court with Scotland Yard detectives and U.S. representatives observing. He complained the arrest was unfair and said he was not warned of his release being brief. The arraignment was postponed for the day.
News of the Duke of Manchester spreading from London reports he is seriously ill and confined to bed with an advanced kidney disease. Contrary to Castle statements, a despatch says he is in a private London sanitarium under specialist care. The Duchess is Miss Zimmerman of Cincinnati.
The Conaway tribe of Red Men held a Friday night gathering as members prepared for an adoption ceremony on December 18 for three palefaces. The main event is the 17th anniversary celebration planned at Odd Fellows temple that evening.

A brief police court session released four first time offenders. Ex-prize fighter William J. Mulligan faced adultery charges and was held for the superior court in $500. His alleged companion Josephine Lambert, charged with fornication, pleaded guilty and fined $15. They were taken from Mulligan’s Wall Street home Friday night by Lieut. Downey and Officer Ganley amid Thanksgiving eve family disputes.
In Washington on December 5, Prof Langley restarts airship experiments on the eastern Potomac near the Washington bar racks. The airship wrecked at Widewater has been repaired and a public test is planned today if weather allows. Langley and Manley express confidence due to motor and launch improvements.
