Charles D. Norris once a car inspector in Ithaca was freed after serving under two years of a five year sentence for stealing bonds and jewelry totaling about 70,000. Boston December 4 Chinatown residents crowded Pemberton Square as the murder trial of Charlie Chinn and Wong Chung neared a verdict. Defense attorney Chas W Bartlett resumed his closing address arguing Chinn was not present at the killing and Wong Chung acted in self defense.
In New York Harbor the tug Arnott struck the J. J. Russell amidships and cut the vessel in two. The Russell sank at once while her crew, including 17 year old deckhand Geo A Sheldon of Jersey City, were saved by the Arnott. Sheldon was knocked overboard but rescued unharmed.
Captain Hoelstad of the American ship Benjamin Sewall reports the vessel wrecked in a October typhoon in Formosan waters. After 48 hours at sea the ship sprang a leak and the crew of 20 abandoned ship in lifeboats. One boat reached Tobago where eight crew members are believed murdered by natives.
