Westport Conn Aug 30 Rear Admiral Schley departed for New York this morning and will return tonight for a dinner in his honor before leaving tomorrow for duties on the Porto Rican commission.
The General Committee names October 18 and 19 for the peace jubilee in Chicago to mark the return of peace. A key feature will be an outdoor President’s reception with the grand army and ex Confederates marching together as a guard of honour.
San Francisco report says corbett and his wife left for New York. He states he will not fight mcoy on October first but plans a bout about a month later.
Readville track opened under favorable conditions with two races completed and three heats in another. In the 2:11 trot Bingen won two heats while Tommy Britton swept the remaining three heats. Charles Herr dominated the 2.30 class heat three, Flirt led in the 2.80 pace, and Star Pointer plus Albatross and Guideless Wonder posted fast miles on the opening day.
A surgeon warned that Camp Wikoff, though healthy today, will breed typhoid if soldiers remain another month. He stated that germs from sinks and cesspools will contaminate the water supply within weeks, risking widespread illness.
At Camp Wikoff this morning the San Marcos and Berlin arrived with Texas volunteers aboard. Five deaths occurred in the camp today including Charles Chapin of the Second Massachusetts. The last detachment of the Ninth Massachusetts is expected today.
Manchester August 30 The FE C Wescott Co stock in this city was auctioned this forenoon. A G Pollard & Co of Lowell bought the stock valued around 22000 dollars, mainly dry and fancy goods. The Lowell firm is believed to have secured a favorable bargain.
Boston Aug 30 The funeral of Maj. O Connor the last of the four Ninth Massachusetts men brought from Cuba was held this forenoon with ceremonies much like those yesterday for the other three.
Indianapolis August 29 a special committee of the Knights of Pythias reported in favor of a per capita tax on each subordinate lodge member to cover supreme lodge expenses, with the tax amount left blank. Another committee backs reducing the supreme tribunal to three members.
A special train transporting sick soldiers of the Eighth New York passed through Buffalo this morning. It carried 260 men with 50 sick with typhoid or malarial fever. Ten are dangerously ill and delirious.
Chicago Aug 30 Senator Davis, member of the peace commission, said today that the Czars proposal offers potential good. He noted obstacles remain but progress could be made through a conference aiming to abandon standing armies and seek lasting peace.
At Ocean Park on Sunday the Free Baptist conference heard Rev. C. A. Bickford argue that war is never justifiable by Christ’s teachings, provoking discussion and opposition. A business session debated publishing the address. In the afternoon a baptism of Mrs. Osgood drew about 1500 people amid wind and rising tides.
Christopher T. Callahan of Holyoke states he will not run for lieutenant governor on the Democratic ticket this fall. He cited workload from major city cases and his role as city solicitor as reasons to decline the nomination. Callahan has supported Williams and the silver democracy and serves as state Democratic committee chairman.
Lawrence division street railway workers have not yet formally protested the company order requiring bonds for conductors and motormen. A committee has been appointed to meet with President Campbell, with no change to the Sept. 15 enforcement date. Superintendent Morton notes similar rules on the Lynn and Boston line and elsewhere, expecting smooth acceptance on the Lowell division.
In police court this morning Frank J. Ney and Bartholomew F. Lynch were charged with vagrancy after police found them “sleeping out.” Each was held in $100 for trial on Sept. 2. Other rulings included Mary Smith’s assault charge dismissed, Judge Hadley calling it a foolish women’s dispute. Thomas McGinn fined $5 for drunkenness with $100 bonds to keep the peace. Additional drunks received jail or fines: Nellie HE. Earles six months, Hattie M. Aujain one month, John J. Brennan $3, Alphonse Gilmore $1.
International cricket action in Philadelphia began with the United States reaching 250 runs in their first innings while Canada trailed at 88 for 3 at stumps on day one at the Marion Cricket Club grounds Haverford.
The Dracut auxiliary of the Massachusetts Volunteer Aid association adjourned meeting voted to transfer all remaining treasury funds to the headquarters in Boston.
The Bay State hospital ship docked at Boston at 1045 hours bearing 101 sick servicemen. George A Pitcher of Lowell died two days from Cuba and was buried at sea. A hundred Greek workers in a Tremont and Suffolk yarn room demanded higher pay after payday. Denied, they quit belts on Saturday and again during overseer changes. Special corporate police were called to eject the workers, who refused to return to work and left positions vacant.
Acting Secretary Allen announces mustering out naval militiamen in bodies rather than individually. New York sailors on the Yankee row will be mustered out collectively with public welcomes. The Navy Department values the service of the militiamen but must retain sailors to man ships, slowing full implementation.

Prof Greeley of Billerica again hosts his Pelham Sing musical demonstration stirred by annual triumphs. The event, featuring Around About the Starry Throne and jubilee chorus, is set for Wednesday October 12 in Billerica with full details to follow.

Five guests from Lower Card Clothing Company Messrs Robert F Hoey Edward P McCash John J Shea Alphonzo Bixby and Thomas Fitzgerald stayed several days at Eeho camp with the Hber Suttons. They praised the hospitality after an exchange of courtesies with steamer boys from Lakeview. They returned home Sunday.
