William A. Larned of Summit New Jersey defends his title against English challenger R F Doherty before a vast Newport crowd at the Casino. The day featured intense betting with many backers wagering heavily as the championship drew one of the season’s largest gatherings.
Thomas Trainor a fifteen year old Bay State mills worker was struck by a Boston and Maine shifting engine on the tracks and his left arm was amputated at the shoulder. He was taken to St John hospital and doctors expect recovery despite the serious injury. The boy resides at No. 99 Whipple street.
Nashua on August 27 noon witnessed the transfer of the Nashua baseball team from Henry M. Burns to Dr. C. S. Collins. The franchise rights were signed over, with the final details settled in the morning. General satisfaction is voiced by players and the public over the change in ownership.

Acting Mayor William E Badger extends sincere thanks to the police and guard units that provided duty during President Roosevelt's visit. The letter commends their valuable assistance in handling arrangements and contributing to a successful reception in the city.
John J. Devine known as Shorty appeared before the police court charged with assault with a knife on Edward W. Leighton after a dispute for 10 cents. Leighton described a stabbing from beneath a belt and multiple thrusts, with Devine claiming intoxication and memory loss. Judge Hadley sentenced him to one year in the house of correction for assault and filed drunkenness. Devine has a long history before the court and is 53 years old.
In Lewis County New York Governor Odell spoke at the Lewis County fair about trusts and tariffs. He argued that agriculture fuels prosperity and that capital and labor deserve rights, while warning against oppressive combinations. He urged careful action on trust regulation without harming existing safeguards that support prosperity.
General orders dated August 27 1902 commend Sergeant Martin Connors for arresting Michael Quinn of Cambridge after a robbery on Market Street. Quinn was caught counting plunder by a prompt stop at the police station. victim identified him. Superintendent Moffatt lauds quick, prudent police work as an example to follow.
Rochester dispatches report the death of former Ohio governor Geo Hoadley at Watkins Glen New York where he had gone for health reasons. An aging health decline led to his bed rest two weeks ago at Glen Springs sanitarium where he had been staying with his family. Sanitarium officials have not disclosed the nature of his ailment.
President Roosevelt enjoyed perfect weather and a brisk morning in Augusta, Maine, where he toured the Kennebec area, accepted bouquets from children, visited the Kennebec Journal office, toured the State House, and spoke briefly at the station before departing for Bangor.
The superintendent of streets opened bids and awarded contracts for smooth paving on Merrimack and Union Paving Company bid for five streets. Awards: Merrimack Paving Company $2.9 per sq yd for Kirk, Paige and Aiken streets. Union Paving $2.96 for Charles street. $2.97 for Westford street. Earlier bids ranged from $2.95 to $3.00 per sq yd.
Rome reports the appointment of Mer Guidi from the papal secretary of state, overseen by Cardinal Rampolla, as apostolic delegate at Manila. The official announcement is expected by week's end.
