Thomas McCaffrey, 22, of 85 French Street, who had lived with William Scott’s family, died at St John's Hospital after being struck near North Chelmsford. Once employed at the Merrimack, he had recently been out of work and habitually rode his wheel. He left home at 7:30 am without his bike and later passed away at 6:30 am, with Scott and relatives noting he was a steady young man and well regarded by neighbors.
The steamer Portland arrived in San Francisco from Unalaska carrying 60 returning prospectors and about 1.5 million dollars in gold, consigned to the Alaska Commercial company. Most of the treasure is from the Cape Nome district.
Charles Riley and Thomas Dever, both of Lowell, were arrested in Manchester New Hampshire on suspicion of involvement in early morning city break ins. Two watches were found on Riley. Both have Lowell police records for drunkenness larceny breaking and entering and robbery. Inspector Allen departed for Manchester with the records.
Mrs Dennis Winn of 116 Fourth Avenue was carried to her home by ambulance after a fainting spell on the street this forenoon. She quickly regained consciousness once inside.
President McKinley and party arrived this morning from Plattsburg on a special four palace car train and will review the military tournament at the horse show grounds in West End Long Branch New Jersey. The event marks a notable ceremonial highlight of the visit to the shore.
Washington on August 25 reports from the war department that transport Ohio arrived this morning. No casualties occurred during the voyage. Five crew members were left sick at Honolulu. Otis signs the dispatch to the Adjutant General from Manila.

In a long rain soaked afternoon crowd of about fifty thousand watched the park playout. The Vixens led the field with a 184 ft 7 in throw while rivals the General Butlers Pawtucket Hay Cart Arlington Marblehead and Eagles followed. The Red Jackets of Cambridge then provided an exhibition throw of 186 ft 5 3 4 in before protests loom over results.

Judge Hadley presided as various offenders appeared in Lowell court this morning. Several pleas of not guilty extended the session, with a full ladies' bench. Alfred W. Searles and Hannah E McDonald were found guilty of fornication and jailed for three months, while Mary Ann McDonald faced charges of keeping a disorderly house. Witness testimony described a disruptive Cambridge Street residence with profanity and late-night gatherings. Deputy Moffatt praised Lowell’s moral condition as cities of its size.
About 25 Bates backers gathered at Senator Holden’s summer home in Billerica to bolster Bates for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor. Speakers praised Bates, with W. H. S. Hayes predicting a large Bates delegation, while Guild opponents warned against party disfavor tactics.
