In Toronto on August 22 banks largely refuse U. S. currency and silver at par. Bank of Montreal accepts only small sums and at a discount. Merchants Bank discounts 1 percent on silver and refuses bills. Other Toronto banks discount from one half to ten percent. Hamilton banks are the only ones accepting American money at par.
Washington reports Hon Hoke Smith secretary of the interior has resigned and the President has accepted the resignation. No further details provided about successor or timing of departure.
Detroit, August 22. The swift steamer Unique sale has closed. Expected to enter Cuban service at $36,000. Nominal buyer is a man named McGonagle. The 123 foot vessel boasts high speed and will be routed via the canal and St Lawrence to the Atlantic.
The executive committee of the building trades council in Chicago announces it will replace all hod carriers at sites where an attempt has been made to hire non union labor. About 1500 hod carriers are currently on strike.
Kansas City report notes former mayor W S Cowherd a free silver Democrat has secured decisive wins at the Aug primary, carrying all contests for his congressional nomination.
Li Hung Chang boarded the American line steamship St Louis at Southampton after departing London for New York aboard a train to the port. He travels to the United States aboard the St Louis, signaling a major transatlantic voyage in August.
The Fall River print cloth market remains very dull with weekly sales estimated between 30,000 and 40,000 pieces and a surplus projected at 20,000. Mills cut production to about 100,000 weekly over seven weeks, while a prior surplus of about 1,713,000 has shrunk only slightly. Curtailed output and wage losses have rippled through industries, with about 1,000,000 dollars withdrawn from trade and many mills closing an extra week beyond July and August plans.
At the Middlesex county Democrats meeting at the Sound Money Democracy headquarters on Friday, a temporary chairman and secretary were chosen. A permanent county organization was formed with William C. Newell of Winchester as chairman, Francis Campbell of Cambridge secretary, and B. F. Dutton of Malden treasurer. A committee for further organization and another committee to prepare an address were appointed, including members from Winchester, Cambridge, Medford, Lowell, Bedford, Woburn, Newton, Everett, and Carlisle.
Boston routed Cincinnati 10 to 9 as Vaughn hit a first inning homer and both Sullivan and Dwyer struggled on the mound. In the National League Philadelphia beat Louisville 13 to 3 and New York defeated Chicago 8 to 0 while Brooklyn and Pittsburgh tied 2 to 2 in darkness. New England League results include Brockton sweeping Portland 6 4 and 9 9 and New Bedford routing Augusta 13 to 4 and 12 to 2.
Eastern League results show Toronto defeating Springfield 8 to 6 in Toronto Scranton beating Rochester 4 to 0 Wilkes Barre over Syracuse 6 to 3 Providence defeated Buffalo 6 to 3 Results from multiple venues indicate tight games and key scoring spurts across the circuit indicating competitive early season play.
An aged couple, John and Mrs. Doherty, appeared in court after a dispute over support. Judge Hadley urged dialogue, and they left arm in arm after announcing a resolved understanding. Others faced charges of non-support, drunkenness, or petty theft with various penalties and probation.

He acts as his own committee and speaker, trading jabs with the Democratic machine and challenging John Harrington as he distributes red fire sticks amid a lively procession and crowd reactions.
Dr. Marshall Whitehouse, a 20 year old dentist staying at the Merrimack house in Lowell, nearly died from an overdose of morphine. He was found semiconscious in bed and later gasping for breath, after which he was moved to St John’s hospital. He had arrived two weeks earlier promising painless tooth extractions and had recently been arrested on debts. he claimed his parents lived in Providence.
J. W. Keyes & Co at 198 and 200 Merrimack street offers heavy black goods at 1.00 from 1.50, new worsted brillian tines at 1.00, wrinkle free Emoras at 0.75 and 0.85, plus extra inducements on colored dress fabrics. Emphasizes money needs and invites customers to view the display.
The Rev. Michael F. Flatley pastor of Immaculate Conception Church Malden died in Saratoga Springs New York after a paraly sis shock suffered during a rest trip with clergy and friends. Born in Ireland in 1843 he studied at Holy Cross Worcester and St Marys Seminary Baltimore was ordained December 28 1868 and served at St James Boston Wakefield St Joseph Wakefield Malden where he became the first permanent rector in 1888.
John H. Leach of Lynn, a fish dealer, was fined 1150 by Judge John W. Berg in police court for possessing 230 short lobsters. Proctor previously raided Leach’s premises in July, lobsters found, and sentence had been continued. Berg said the law required a $5 per lobster fine.
Preliminary arrangements were made at the republican headquarters for a Highland drum corps. Next Monday night Blaine and Logan club will meet and the McKin ley and Hobart guards, a new organization, will assemble Tuesday night. H. C. Church & Son advertise specialty of dwelling house insurance on very low terms.
