In Pittsfield on August 20 Miss May Fosburg aged 24 daughter of Buffalo contractor R L Fosburg was killed by a masked burglar among a trio. The elder Fosburg and his son were knocked unconscious. suspects were arrested as a posse pursued. Funeral rites featured Chopin and hymns with notable attendees.
Berlin reports a Chefoo consular cable stating the Dowager Empress may be inside the Pekin palace while allied forces continue bombardment of the city fortifications.
Washington dispatch reports that Sergeant J. F. Fenning and Privates C. R. King J. W. Tucker J. Kennedy R. E. Thomas A. Turner H. Fisher were killed at Pekin while Private J. Bahroder was wounded. Seaman J. Mitchell also listed wounded. All other wounded and sick have returned to duty. In Tan Tating Major Biddle's command saw First Lieutenant Butler and Privates Green and Warrel slightly wounded.
News from Vancouver reports an earthquake on the tenth that shook Skagway for 70 seconds and was stronger at Dawson. Government buildings toppled, a mountain split in two, and a river canyon formed leaving five miles dry.
Dedham reports Joseph De Pietri of East Dedham fatally shot his sister-in-law Mary Willard in the head this morning. He fled the scene and remains at large as police search for him.
Constantinople announces Shekih Bey, head of the foreign office cipher bureau, will serve as Turkish minister to the United States, replacing Ali Ferrouh Bey who has been recalled from Washington.
Berlin August 20 Field Marshal Count Von Waldersee and his staff departed Berlin this morning for China amid dispatches detailing strategic duties and potential diplomatic missions.
Ex Senator John J. Ingalls was buried in Atchison Kansas after simple funeral rites at Trinity Episcopal church. Services were private per family request and the body was later interred in Mt Vernon cemetery family vault.
Washington crowds bid farewell to 1400 Cuban school teachers after a Washington visit honoring Cuba and the United States. The group toured the Capitol, viewed the statue hall and the rotunda, and marveled at the Washington Monument. Cuban women waved kerchiefs as men cheered.
In New York on August 20 the Cuban teachers arrived in Jersey City after leaving Washington. Ferryboats awaited them and they boarded immediately, heading down the river toward the transports for their next destination.
Nashua police captured three men in Hudson on Saturday who gave names as Charles William and John A Cargill of Boston. They were held for a hearing in bonds of 1000 dollars each. A Brookline inspector, with a janitor from that town, identified William Cargill as one of two men wanted for broaching flats last June in Brookline. Charles Cargill had been arrested in June 1886 in Boston for alleged jewelry larceny worth 1200 dollars.
The Journal and Advertiser says Harry Cornish has written his resignation as physical director of the Knickerbocker Athletic Club. A board member expects acceptance at the next governors meeting. He will retire from athletics and may pursue another business, details unavailable.
In an unusually severe morning storm a lightning strike damaged the Sanford Spinning plant in Fall River. Sprinklers quickly extinguished the blaze, with about $800 in damage reported before the fire was controlled.
In East Lexington on Fern street during the Sims family absence a Sunday afternoon blaze gutted a room on the second story. Cause undetermined but suspected to involve mice and matches. Loss placed at 200 dollars with insurance.
James Trubey of George C Moore's mills in North Chelmsford was hit by an inbound Tyngsboro car near John Marinell Jr residence. He suffered a severe left leg fracture requiring amputation below the knee, plus a dislocated shoulder and broken left little finger. he was taken to St Johns hospital.
Agent C H Taft of the Boston & Maine railroad nearly died after touching a live 1100 volt wire atop the Middlesex street depot roof. He described no pain despite severe burns to his thumb and index finger and singed feet. His pulse fluctuated and left side muscles showed semi paralysis after the accident. He survived due to quick help from two bystanders.

A morning blaze in the Tremont and Suffolk card room caused water damage and slight actual fire loss. Sprinklers soaked machinery. firemen were not summoned, and total losses may exceed $1000 due to water damage.
Lieut Frank G Rose plans to resign from Company C prior to Christmas likely in late September or early October He does not intend to resign before a company meeting He became second lieutenant when Capt Greig was detailed for service in the 26th regiment Lieutenant Livingston became captain and Thomas Kittredge first lieutenant The resignation is stated to be personal in character
The Me thuen selectmen last week awarded the contract to Cyrus Barton of this city for rebuilding four bridges on the new macadamized Lowell road at 3135 dollars, the lowest bid. Other bidders were C. B. Trumbull & Co and J. Chambers of Lawrence.
Miss Etta H. Warren, mother of an abandoned infant found on a door step, was arrested in Nashua and held for trial. She confessed after initial hesitation and explained rejecting a marriage proposal. She remains in Lowell jail under bond set at 300 dollars as her sister prepares to testify tomorrow.
Frank W Hapgood of 538 Moody Street employed by Lawrence Manufacturing was taken by ambulance to Lowell Corporation Hospital at 10 15 this forenoon. A wooden roll fell from an upper window in the yard striking him on the back of the head causing a scalp wound.
Martin Flaherty the Lowell pugilist, training partner Joe Flaherty accompanies him to Troy New York for the bout with Jack Hamilton slated for tomorrow night. Flaherty declares he is in peak condition.
Jeff Beazley of 80 Fifth Street suffered burns on his left arm and the left side of his face this morning while working on the Merrimack. He was treated at the scene and may require further medical care.
The Pacific and Everett mills shut down for two weeks affecting nearly 7000 workers. A joint committee of five circles from the Companions of the Forest of America and two Haverhill circles met in Pythian hall to plan a welcome for supreme chief companion Mrs. Sarah Storey of Philadelphia, visiting Lawrence on Wednesday, October 24.
Complications may occur in settling the estate of Mrs. Jennie Janes of Manchester after her sudden death. She had bank funds and West Manchester land, with an estate likely over $1000 after funeral expenses. Her will leaves residue to St Pauls church for worn‑out Methodist preachers, naming James D. Philbrick of Boston as sole executor.
Newport Rhode Island August 20 news confirms that the Belvoir villa on Beacon Hill once occupied by Mr and Mrs William K Vanderbilt Jr has been sold to J Edward Addicks of Delaware. He plans it as a summer residence and will visit Newport each season though he will keep his Clayport Delaware home. The stone house sits on scenic grounds with ocean views near Grosvenor Morgan Bush and Duryea villas. The purchase price is not disclosed but estimated around 80000 dollars. Vanderbilt may buy another Newport property.
