Davenport reports from Sunbury describe a kidnapping of Mrs. John Hilston by a man claiming their son was ill. The couple was separated on a lonely road with Hilston thrown from a buggy. Mrs Hilston escaped after being locked in a cellar, while the husband is missing, authorities search. She is in critical condition from exposure.
William Decker was shot and killed on a Dutchess county road near his home at Pulver's corners last night. Neighbors heard a pistol shot as they spoke with him moments before. The body lay in the road with his shirt burned and the bullet in the heart. Coroner Caulkins and District Attorney Lee investigate. deputies seek a man seen nearby. Decker left a wife and two small children and lived on Adam Pulver's farm.
A Boston Curling club delegation visited the Vesper Country Club to teach bowls. The Vesper players outscored their instructors in two games, 21 to 15 and 21 to 18, turning the visit into an unexpected schooling in the sport.

Fourteen men were injured at the New York navy yard while riveting steel plates on the battleship Connecticut. Riveting machines pounded as bolts flew in a shower, striking workers on the head and body. None seriously hurt.

Ellen Kelleher, a wealthy 65-year-old widow from Lawrence Massachusetts, left on a San Francisco journey July 27 and vanished after her train passed Albany to Buffalo. Conductors’ stubs show she left the train mid route. search efforts continue without results while she was en route to join Mrs. J J Dunn in San Francisco.
Newport Aug 18. The tennis tournament opened on clear warm morning with a big crowd watching the doubles match Ward and Ware of the Host face Collins and Wardner of the West. Ward and Ware won and will meet the Dohertys in the final likely tomorrow. Ward and Ware were favored by bettors though Western opponents were uncertain in class.
The Empress of India collided with the Chinese cruiser Huangtai near Hong Kong. Huangtai sank an hour after the collision. 13 crew were drowned. The Empress of India saved 170 Huangtai crew members and was badly damaged amidships.
Pittsburg Pa August 18 the Herrs Island stock yards costing over 3 million dollars near completion will be formally opened September 7 with A J Cassatt president of the Pennsylvania railroad as guest of honor. Ten thousand invitations issued and preparations arranged for crowd of 25000 while the yards will be controlled by the Union Stock Yards company.
Senator M S Quay arrived in Pittsburg this morning en route to Beaver from Southampton L I. A sensational report circulated that he had died on the train but he was in his usual health.

Other docket items include Alfred J Cronin delayed due to delirium tremens, Owen J Mulligan fined and appealed, Kalil Mata pleading not guilty to assault, and several minor levies for drunkenness.
The Kaiser Wilhelm II reached New York after a five day ten hour voyage from Bremen Southampton and Cherbourg covering 3052 miles at 22.58 knots. Four Lowell boys aged 13 to 16 were arrested in Cambridge for stealing rides on freight trains after leaving home Monday to see Boston. James Hogan 15, James Heathcock 16, Edward Turner 16, and Frederick J Mullin 13, all from near Broadway, were caught while leaving cars in Cambridge yards and turned over to police. Parents were notified and planned to travel to Cambridge.
In Milton at 4 a.m. a mysterious man fired twice at Policeman Joseph F. Donovan and fled the scene. Donovan had approached on Ela ridge hill to question the intruder about his activities, but the assailant escaped custody.
Newport Rhode Island August 18 Louis Donovan chauffeur for R A Agassiz was fined ten dollars and costs for exceeding speed limit. Mr Agassizs father Professor Agassiz has pressed for police to enforce the law against automobiles and helped secure an injunction against the proposed automobile road race in Newport.
Philadelphia August 18. Six hundred dyers who last night voted to secede from textile strikers resumed work today. Three dye establishments immediately began operations. No concessions were granted and some strikers returned to work with a five percent wage cut.
