The Olympia with Admiral Dewey arrived at Naples on August 5. Salutes were exchanged and Dewey was visited by the American embassy secretarys in Rome, the American consul general, and the vice consul. The Olympia will stay in Naples for a month.
Thick fog, light wind, long ground swell and heavy rain squalls spoiled the yacht race from Bateman's Point Rhode Island today. Competitors Defender Vigilant Navahoe Syce and Kestral faced unsatisfactory conditions delaying or altering plans.
New York reports most Harvard Yale athletes visiting England have returned from competitions with Oxford and Cambridge. They report hearty greetings and describe the English as bully fellows.
Vice President Hobart arrived by special train in Plattsburg New York this morning and was met at the station by the President in a carriage. Hobart is reported weak from grip illness.
Southampton reports Thomas B. Reed Senator William J. Sewall of New Jersey Daniel Frohman and Richard Croker sail on the St Paul for New York this morning.
George P Crosby was fatally injured after being run over by a car in Greenwood. Police and emergency crews responded to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
A man from Lowell was struck by a streetcar whose wheels amputated his right leg and he was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. The dispatch, printed in a Boston paper, could not be verified locally and a George Crosby is not listed in Post 42 of the G. A. R. in Lowell.
The Massachusetts State board of trade led by president Charles E Adams seeks the two new Cunard steamers then nearing completion for Boston and Liverpool service. Boston harbor improvements and depth increases favor Boston, with Boston and Albany railroad shift aiding freight to the port. Liverpool distance arguments push ships toward Boston. Cunard petition sent via agent Alexander Martin in Liverpool.
Arrangements are made by the Clovers social club for a picnic at Nabnassett grove on next Saturday afternoon. A ball game between two strong teams and a large array of interesting sports will be participated in. if the day is pleasant, a large number will attend.
The funeral for Oliver M. Harding was held at his home on Saturday July 29 at 2 p m with Rev D W Hardy and Rev J E Bowman presiding. Interment followed at Fox Hill cemetery. Harding, once an overseer in the Boott mills, lived in East Billerica and later central town. He was a deacon of the Orthodox Congregational church and is survived by his widow and a daughter Mrs G P Greenwood of South Billerica. Also noted is the death of Mrs Mary Dickinson mother of Mr Fred Dickinson of Lowell, with funeral held Friday and burial at South cemetery.
Robert Ritchie remained dangerously ill though a bit more comfortable, while Mrs. Walter Dyson slowly improved but recalls nothing before her accident. Mr. W. F. Hills and wife returned from New York, Mr. Henry Potts enjoys a week off. About 25 Lowell residents led by Mrs. Garrity met at Mrs. Mary Shallon's, dancing and refreshments followed, the group left on the last electric. Talbot mills tenants now have lawn mower access prompting renewed yard care, especially on Wilson Street.
Officials in the fire marshal's office mark a Tyngsboro blaze return sent by the town selectmen. A farm house was struck by lightning killing cattle and the report blamed carelessness of the Lord, a view opposed by several staffers. An ambulance was sent for John Lambert of 1b Hancock Avenue injured by a crushed foot.
Major Edward T Rowell longtime Lowell leader and president of the Courier Citizen died suddenly on a Boston to Lynn train from heart failure. He was born in Concord New Hampshire August 14 1836 and served in Berdans Sharpshooters during the Civil War. He led Lowell newspapers for a quarter century and held public posts including postmaster and gas commissioner. He leaves a wife and daughter and the funeral is set for Tuesday.
The Woonsocket Star reports rumors that George W. Cumnock may resign as superintendent of the Social mill, after health-related absence and unsettled plans for a September return. Charles H. Merriman and family hold major stakes in Social, with ties to the Appleton mill in Lowell speculated as a new posting if Cumnock leaves.
The 88th annual report shows 1,380,892 copies of the Christian Scriptures issued in the year ending June 30. Of these 780,948 came from the Bible House in New York and the rest abroad, with 119,673 issued overseas from the Bible House. Chaplains in the navy received 1,250 and 71,360 went to the Army YMCA for soldiers and sailors in the Spanish American War. Interest grows in China and Japan with imperial favor and translations in Hingua and Foochow and Shanghai dialects. Since 1816 the society has issued 65,962,505 copies.
Lowell electric car employees seek a wage rise of a few cents per hour, criticizing a citywide pay disparity. Regular workers earn 19 cents hourly, relief 18 cents, and spare 17 cents for identical work, with new hires unpaid until deemed competent. similar practices exist in Haverhill.
Mrs. James Kirk and Miss Catherine Murphy married last Wednesday by Rev. H. W. C. Millington at the Fifth Street Baptist parsonage.
Mrs Ann Sykes wife of Deacon James Sykes of the Eliot Congregational church died at her home 74 London street at age 67. She was a native of England and leaves her husband and two sons, including Louis By who works at Putnam & Sons in this city.
Funeral services were held yesterday for Frank Faircloth at Molloy undertakers with Fr. Leonard at the grave in the Catholic cemetery. Warner S Smith’s funeral occurred at his North Chelmsford home with Rev. Ernest R. Caswell presiding. burial followed in Edson cemetery with T. O. G. T. ritual led by Ernest M. Locke and chaplain Lillian M. Ferris. Bearers included Gen Fishlodge members and local Sunday school attendees IRving Wood and Walter Bowers.
One intoxicated man Thomas Leary was discharged by the court on probation officer recommendation. Simon Shevrin’s larceny case was postponed to August 9. Ernest Genest’s milk law violation continued to Monday. Other drunkenness cases for Edward Dolan Edward Sheehy and Mary McGovern were filed. John Sullivan’s unlicensed dog case was placed on file. Louis Perrault pleaded guilty to stealing a wrench from Boott mills and was fined five dollars.
