St Johns N F Aug 5 The mail steamer Virginia Lake arrived at Tilt Cove with corroboration of the loss of an ocean liner in the Straits of Belle Isle. A Noddy Bay fisherman said he saw the steamer collide with an iceberg and sink shortly after.
Gen Shafter reports the sanitary condition in Santiago with 3778 total sick 2699 fever cases 449 new fever cases 585 returned to duty and 6 deaths as of yesterday in Washington.

Among provisional militia officers examined yesterday in Boston were Lowell men Captain George E. Worthen of Co. 9 Captain George D. Kimball of Co. 22 B. W. Farnham first lieutenant Co. 22 A. D. Colby first lieutenant Co. 9 Geo. L. Fowler second lieutenant Co. 9 Fred A. Estes first lieutenant Co. 15 Patrick J. McDermott second lieutenant Co. 15. All passed the examination.
A meeting was held Thursday evening by the Lowell Veteran Firemen's association. Their hand masheen was tested on the canal banks, sending a stream of 210 feet 1% inches. They plan to compete in a tournament on August 16 in Portland.
