War correspondent F Roy Martin reports a crisis in Gen Garrettson s Sixth Massachusetts regiment as Col Woodward Lieut Col Chaffin Major Taylor Chaplain Dusseault and Capt Goodell resign their commissions. Major Darling assumes command and Gen Miles orders a rigid investigation into the friction and grounds for the resignations.
Private Walter A. Holden of Co. H Sixth regiment writes from aboard the Yale dated July 24 1898 that after fourteen days at sea they paused at Santiago before landing and now head to Porto Rico. He complains of the rations scarce and promises to fight hard while hoping to return home. He notes Corporal Charles F. Parker of Co A Wakefield died of typhoid and was buried at sea and that Holden signed his pay roll for seven dollars a month extra to his father.
William Hunt of Company G Sixth Regiment writes from Camp Porto Rico on July 24, 1898 to S. W. Foster in this city. He sends a silk Cuban flag with endorsement and hopes for thoughts of comrades at front and reunion on return. He laments sea life after leaving Camp Alger and a 16 day voyage aboard the Yale.
Newsboys on a morning outing were found carrying a large bundle of Havana cigars. Three youths were detained on larceny charges, revealing the box was taken from Albert Wheeler's grocery. One boy, Narcisse Borveleau, eleven, held to answer the charge.
Margaret Dusty was sentenced to six months in jail by Judge Hadley this morning for drunkenness. Ernest N. Cox fined fifteen dollars for larceny of civilian clothing from Batteryman Mc Evoy of Fort Winthrop. in default after three days he will serve three months in jail. Narcisse Borveleau, under seventeen, was held for juvenile day on a charge of larceny of cigars.
Alderman L A Derby fell severely ill last night at his home. Doctors diagnosed appendicitis and said treatment would depend on how the disease progresses.
The Old Saugus meeting at Franklin Park opens next Tuesday and is expected to be one of the best midsummer gatherings at the track. Manager Hitchings has secured upwards of 100 entries, with many horses slated to run at other venues next week.

A horse attached to a light open bogey owned by a Boston dealer ran away in Central street just before noon. It began between Market and Middle streets, turned onto Middle at a gallop, dragging the driver between wheels. Two teams were struck, a heavy wagon clipped the buggy, the driver bruised and a shaft and wheel were damaged.
