Boston August 2 Frederick E Hurd assistant attorney general withdrew from the attorney general race as Boston candidates Harris Parker Guild Knowlton factor location mattered. Hurd will leave state service when Knowlton retires and may pursue Suffolk district attorney later returning to private practice in law.
The Traders National Bank offers general banking, foreign exchange in seven global currencies, safety deposit boxes, savings at 4 percent per year compounded semi annually with monthly interest, and a ladies banking room. Pittsburg August 2 The steel conference reopened with Shaffer Williams and other Amalgamated officials present. The union has received no reply from New York regarding more talks after a telegram last night refusing further discussion. The union now faces two options: order a return to work or extend the strike across its constituent companies.
San Francisco reports the tug Slocum set out last night to locate the disabled transport Lennox. The Lennox lies 180 miles south of the city and 40 miles at sea with a broken shaft and dwindling provisions as it drifts awaiting rescue.
New York August 2 George Bissert a police officer was found guilty by a jury before Recorder Goff of taking a $550 bribe from the keeper of a disorderly house. Bissert was remanded to the Tombs pending sentence.
Washington August 2 The war department did not announce today the successor to Admiral Kimberley on the Schley court of inquiry. The Admiral's letter of declination states that his health makes it impossible for him to serve.
In San Francisco on August 2 a prompt settlement of the water front strike appears likely as a conference is scheduled for today with expectations of an understanding before night.
Thieves damaged three coin operated slot devices in the Lakeview pavilion during Thursday night. They rifled machines, dropped 60 cents, and tossed them into the lake. They entered the dining room through a window, searched a closet box for 15 in copper, and fled after a nearby watcher heard noises. A possible second visit to Mountains is suspected.
In a Boston police court session Judge Pickman dealt with multiple cases. Joseph Flynn paid a $3 fine for cruelty to a cat in Concord Street after an Humane Society witness described Flynn throwing the animal. A 17 year old girl Nellie Hayes faced drunkenness charges but was released on condition of conforming to a doctor’s prescription. Others, including Bernard Logan, Michael J Donnelly, Patrick F Casey, Ellie Cohen, George Maguire and Anne Maguire, appeared for drunkenness, neglect of child, and related matters. The court placed several children under probation or relatives’ care with the Home for Destitute Catholic Children involved, while several men were fined or sent to the workhouse.
In Parliament Lord Stanley stated the South Africa war cost from April 1 to July 31 reached 178.75 million dollars with July at 6.26 million. If costs kept steady for three more months the reserve for the quarter might be exhausted, though the chancellor expressed hope it would not be needed.

The funeral for Mary Rooney was held at her parents 44 Agawam street yesterday at 2 p.m. Rev J M Craig officiated and Isabel Tullock led singing. Bearers were Sunday school members Harry Hastings Alex Robinson Sydney Swabey Hugh Rooney with numerous floral tributes from Friends and family. Undertaker Weinbeck conducted the services.
Boston August 1 nine year old Fred Arnold arraigned in Somerville police court on breaking and entering with intent to steal from Mrs Goode home. Witnesses described thefts totaling watches, cash and a compass seized from Arnold and a confederate, Raymond Ness, 7, not prosecuted due to age. Judge Farrell convicted Arnold and ordered custody by the State Lunacy and Charity board after a tearful plea from his parents.
An unidentified intruder entered the house when occupants were away, started the gas stove, made coffee, and enjoyed a pipe and tobacco belonging to the resident. Police are investigating the break in and seek information on the suspect.
The Lowell council No. 8 Royal Arcanum held a large meeting at the Odd Fellows' building with visitors from other city councils. One new member application. Boston council No. 4 invited to visit on Oct. 3, promising about 200 members and a band. Concert, social time, and whist followed.
Lieut. George FE. Garity has been appointed a second lieutenant of cavalry in the regular United States army. The promotion was announced by a press dispatch though official notification is pending, and Garity expects to learn more today or tomorrow. He will seek to join the 12th cavalry, where he has many friends.
Lowell lodge of Odd Fellows hosted a deep sea fishing trip from Boston aboard the King Philip with nearly a hundred participants. The excursion, 25 miles offshore, was a success and featured William H. Favre catching the day’s largest bluefish weighing 13 1/2 pounds. The organizing committee included James A. Osgood as chair and members A W Garland E B Long C F George and A B Kelly.
