In R I Bateman Aug 1, the Newport Yacht Racing Association regatta featured Columbia and Independence on a 30 mile triangular course from Brenton's light ship. Columbia led early, Independence closed in later, and no time limit. Lawson denial of a $100,000 payout stood.
Washington August first The navy department refused to modify the fifth specification of the precept to the court of inquiry regarding Admiral Schley. He challenged the specification in a letter alleging disobedience of orders. Officials state the records show Schley acknowledged disobeying orders.
The Amalgamated conference reconvened in Pittsburg Pennsylvania on August 1 with all agenda items from yesterday. Joseph Bishop former Ohio board of arbitration official and ex president of the Amalgamated Association of Steel Workers attended. President Shaffer spoke at 11 o'clock and discussion followed. Proceedings remain secret.
Lorenzo Marquez reports a Boer commando with two guns entered Portuguese territory and encamped at Guanetz. Five hundred Portuguese troops are already there and artillery moved out this morning. If the Boers do not surrender, 300 more troops will be deployed.
Chicago Aug 1 no clue obtained of the men who held up the Baltimore and Ohio vestibule limited near Miller's station Indiana last night. A reward of 500 dollars is offered for information leading to the bandits.
London reports the death of Lady Hilda Prod rick wife of the secretary of state for war after a brief illness. She passed away this morning at her residence in London bringing an early end to the prominent public figure.
Paris July 31 The papers report Santos-Dumont plans a possible American demonstration after finishing experiments in Europe. He told an AP correspondent he has declined several U S exhibition offers but may take a balloon to America at summer’s end for practical demonstrations to scientists.
Thirty passengers escaped electrocution after a 400 foot trolley wire broke near Main street and Seventh avenue in Haverhill. Motorman Forrest O. Jones and Conductor A. C. Teed battled blasts as the car burned. passengers leaped from the speeding vehicle while City Marshal Frank McLaughlin guided panicked crowds. Traffic halted for hours.
Judge Dennis J. McCarthy of New York died at Union hospital after a year of mysterious residence in Fall River with Col. Hart and a lavish, occupationless lifestyle. Brother Fr. James J. McCarthy arrived from New York claiming the judge vanished last August leaving a wife and three children. A Boston man claimed mining interests and hurried to settle affairs before death. an undertaker prepared the embalming and interment.
New York July 31 Gen Rafael Uribe Uribe is declared outlaw by the Colombian government with confiscation of property and threat of life imprisonment if he enters the country again. El Heraldo calls for dismissal of minister Martinez Silva after Uribe Silva talks. Times tomorrow will report on Gen Herbert O Jeffries visiting to buy a gunboat vessel for the Panama Department. Francis A Gudger resigns as U S vice consul general at Panama arrives aboard the Advance from Colon.
Berlin on July 31 reports Emperor William ordered all German troops in Pekin during the siege be advanced to non commissioned officer ranks.
The city faces intense lobbying as Mayor Dimon considers three to four days to review new loan orders. Council members Pearson Sullivan and others push borrowing while taxpayers on the street voice opposition. The lobby seeks to bind the mayor, claiming the Belvidere loan already passed, with paving and bath orders awaiting action.
A Cumberland British Columbia dispatch says a fire burns in mine No 4. All miners escape except pumpman Nichols who is cut off. Rescuers fight to reach Nichols and locate the fire as efforts continue.
A kerosene can near a stove caused a blaze in a two story building at 60-62 William Street. A Pole mother with two children escaped through a window after passing the children to bystanders below despite language barriers. Firefighters fought the flames across three D. J. An alarm from box 7 just before 10 last night reported a fire in a three story block on Dutton street owned by P. H. Goldman and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hazleton. The house was unoccupied when discovered and furniture belonging to the Hazletons burned. smoke from a window drew onlookers. The damage was small.
Firefighters battled a morning blaze in the hay loft of Jacob Kaplan’s barn on Edson street. One sleigh stored aloft was destroyed though overall damage was minor. Insurance on the barn contents was held by Fred C. Church. A separate alarm from box 238 reported a small mattress fire at Mrs Cary’s Bowden street home, with slight damage.
Sixteen stitches closed Michael McDermott’s head wound after timber fell at Harvard Brewing works. Lewis Preston sprained his left leg and arm when a broken belt hit a lead pipe. Albert Leihbacher burned his left hand by hot tar. Charles Clancy lacerated his left fingers on a slipped beam. John L. Jones had his right thumb amputated at the first joint after forgetting cog dangers. All wounded were treated at the Emergency hospital.
In Galveston on July 31 a banquet at the Union club celebrated W. S. minister Henry L. Wilson to Chile. Cabinet ministers local authorities and society leaders attended. Senor Marcial Martinez toasted The United States. Wilson spoke of Chile progress and U S Chile relations. Luis M. Rodriguez closed the event with remarks.
In Newcastle New Hampshire on July 31 the Wentworth courts hosted the first round of singles and began doubles. S P Ware defeated A L Robinson 6-2 6-2 while C Hobart beat H H Whitman 6-1 6-2. In doubles the Wright brothers defeated W Duren and L W McGinley 6-1 6-0. H H Whitman and C Penhallow beat R James and A L Robinson 7-5 7-5. R D Little and W B Alexander defeated J S Seabury and C A Nettleton 6-1 6-3.
Rev William Merrill and his Lowell based family have been in Fitzwilliam New Hampshire recently and are spending their summer vacation in Royalston Massachusetts.
