City Messenger reports Captain Alexander Greig’s letter from aboard the Yale recounting the Sixth Regiment’s movements near Santiago and Guantanamo, the decision not to ashore due to yellow fever, a fatality among the color guard from Wakefield, burial at sea with flag and taps, and plans to land in Porto Rico where Co C is projected to be first on land. The note also confirms the regiment’s health and that Lowell men in the Ninth are well.
The hospital ship Solace set sail from New York for Santiago and Porto Rico to aid soldiers. The vessel will deliver relief supplies and medical support as improvements to the operation are noted.
Dr. F R Rix and family occupy their cottage on Baker's Island for two weeks. Superintendent George N Knowlton and family depart for Maine to stay through August due to Mrs. Knowlton's mother's illness. Unitarian lawn party slated for Wednesday evening on Emersons grounds. Central Congregational summer outing planned at Warren's grove on the same Wednesday. In Knowltons absence Dr E H Chamberlin, school committee chair, can issue labor certificates.
A grand patriotic concert and entertainment by the North Chelmsford Christian Endeavor society will be held in the town hall on Wednesday evening the 3rd. The program features a flag drill led by Miss Fannie Holt an Indian club drill by a Tyngsboro woman Mrs Jarley s wax works and additional musical selections.
Dennis Mahoney testifies the trouble came from his mother-in-law as he faces a non-support charge. He claims he gave a five dollar bill and his payroll job supports his wife. The mother-in-law heckles the court while Mahoney’s case is postponed for payroll verification. Two men, Cox and Shea, plead drunkenness and are fined one dollar each. Lizzie Paul and Thomas Paul, brother and sister, face drunkenness charges with long sentences to Sherborn and unspecified.
The gold medal to be awarded to George Charette is on display in Lowell Merrimack street window. The circular pendant bears an engraving of the U S S Merrimac and the date June 8 1898, a handsome tribute by L Association Catholique to the brave Lowell man.
Surmounted by the American and Cuban flags the medal features the American Eagle and wreath of honor with crossed guns between two chains. An inscription in French notes George Charette as a hero of Santiago Bay Cuba and the back bears the association and hero names. The piece is artistic and awaits the young hero’s return to appreciate fellow members’ gift.
Patrick Eagan heard cries and found Patrick Davis assaulting Mrs Smith on the Smith farm near Willow Dale road. Davis attacked Eagan with a hoe and a dog, leaving Eagan with a head wound, a cut elbow, a broken finger, and bites to his side and legs. Davis fled and police search the area. Eagan was treated at St John’s Hospital. Mrs Smith’s husband is said to work in Lowell.

A special meeting of the Massachusetts corporation reportedly approved adding a new mill to its Lonsdale Georgia plant. The unit will have capacity for 20 000 spindles. Agent Southworth is away and cannot confirm the report. Details are scarce.
A telegram from Lieut. R. E. Bell at Fortress Monroe, Virginia reports twelve Massachusetts men, including Lowell native Angus McDonald, will start for home tonight. McDonald, of the Ninth regiment, fell ill at Santiago and was sent back to Fortress Monroe for recovery.
Mr William W Crosby a MIT graduate succeeds C P Brooks as director of the Lowell textile school He previously served as chief instructor in mechanics and machine drawing He was born in Arlington now lives in Woburn and is about 27 years old Crosby took charge Monday and plans include catalog revision and new work urged by Hon Charles H Allen.
Tennis Rock, 24, was arrested Monday evening by Dracut Chief Peter Donohoe on cruelty to a horse charges. A Chelmsford Street machinist, Rock hired a turnout in Nashua claiming to be a traveling salesman. Lakeview detail shows the horse overdriven and exhausted, likely beyond recovery.
Two men stole a horse and buggy from the American House stables on Sunday and hired it to return in two hours but did not. A colored man who accompanied them rode back alone. The trio drove toward the Andover road before separating.
Tickets for the ninth annual news boys picnic by J. L. Chalifoux will be given at his store starting 8 a.m. tomorrow Wednesday August 3. No tickets will be distributed on Thursday, the day of the picnic.
Hanahan, a boy, slipped from a cellar trapeze in the Oaklands Saturday and struck his head on a rock. He was rushed to St. John's hospital where his condition is critical.

Word reaches this city of the death in Buffalo on July 1 of George T. Comins. He formerly resided here and was in Lowell and Concord as a bedsteads manufacturer with a southern trade. He later moved to Buffalo and engaged in other business. Survived by wife Helen Parkhurst of Chelmsford, four children Edward P. Comins of Boston, Carrie Hunter of Glen Ridge, Amy and Waldo Comins of Buffalo, and a large circle of acquaintances.
Funeral services were held yesterday for Ellen Follansby at St Patrick's Church with a solemn mass. Bearers included Martin J Courtney James Tweed and others. Interment in Catholic cemetery under Undertaker O'Donnell. Also noted were funerals for Daniel Burke at St Peter's Church and Theodore J H Burtt at 189 Westford Street with extensive floral tributes and Wilson cemetery burial. Jasper H White’s funeral was from 1255 Middlesex Street with services by Rev Charles L Merriam and burial in Edson cemetery. Undertaker J A Weinbeck supervised arrangements.
