In Washington on April 7 the House Foreign Affairs Committee heard M. Quesada of the Cuban Junta, who was pledged to secrecy during his testimony this morning.
Senator Gray, after a conference with President McKinley, said he believed Woodford and Lee would not be at their posts after the opening of the week. The remark follows Washington discussions dated April 7.

Fort Monroe Virginia April 7 The battleship Texas arrived this morning and joined the flying squadron. The Senate adjourned today until Monday.

Washington April 7 reports the Spanish minister received a telegram from the Cuba governor general stating that rumors of impending trouble in Cuba are absolutely false. No cause for alarm is indicated and normal conditions are expected to continue.
County commissioners heard a heated remonstrance over widening Andover street through the Nesmith estate at Nesmith and Andover streets. Nesmith heirs want to preserve trees and privacy. damages are estimated around $25,000, with costs debated among abutters, engineers, and petitioners.
The Red Seal Remedy company property in the Allen building Rock and Willie streets was sold at public auction to satisfy mortgagees. Cr. H. Hanson auctioned with two bidders, D. L. Page of this city and a man from Attleboro. Page won at 8000 dollars. Terms: 500 cash, balance in 10 days at John C. Burke’s office. The stock included office furniture and all raw and manufactured materials with fixtures. mortgagors included O. B. Ranlett, F. M. Bill, and C. H. Tappan. They endorsed notes for 10,000 dollars and foreclosed after failing to redeem. Page may represent a stockholder syndicate.
Selectmen receive three liquor license applications for Martin Farrell at Riverside Street, Timothy Leary at School and Pleasant streets, and Thomas Scully at Lakeview Avenue and Pleasant Street in Navy Yard village. Premises will be inspected early next week with licenses to be granted soon for May operation. Also noted are visits by W H Young of Hunter & Young to Upfam Street and Merrimack Woolen Mills summer hours from 6.30 am to 6.15 pm with Friday half holiday.
Fire destroyed the Prescott owned homestead in Forge Village last night. The blaze quickly consumed the barn and household goods were saved with difficulty. The Abbot company rented the house and insured loss is 4000 with Church and Son. Prescott now resides in Westford.

Six of seven drunks in the police court this morning received $1 fines, with William H. Somers fined $3 as an old offender. Assault cases took much time as William and Simion Landaue had their charges to J. Goldman, a Hebrew peddler, continued to April 12. John L. Stevens was fined $25 for unpaid conduct.

David Peters assistant engineer at the gas works was assaulted.
Miss Cornelia Davis longtime sixth grade teacher at Carter Street School Lowell dies Tuesday afternoon at her home in Billerica after a brief typhoid pneumonia illness. She was elected a teacher in 1871. Mrs. S W North of Lawrence, formerly of Lowell, also dies after a brief illness. Mr. Thomas F Butler age 33 dies Wednesday at No 5 Goward Place off Appleton Street. He was a past chief ranger of Court Middlesex F of A and leaves a wife and four children.
Funeral services for Mrs. A L Gordon were held at her home yesterday at 10 o clock in the morning with Rev. A F E Wilson presiding.
Miss Lena Bagshaw daughter of W. H. Bagshaw enters Elmhurst academy. Miss Mabel Nichols of New York visits Mrs. Preetor of South Walker street as guest. Miss Agnes Markham sister of Councilman Markham ill at St John’s hospital. Dr E Carter elected director of New England Pharmacal company at yesterday’s Boston meeting.
Deaths announced in this city include Thomas F. Butler of 6 Goward place aged 33 Cornelia M. Davis of Billerica aged 59 and William Sexton of 12 New street aged 78 Funeral services for Butler and Sexton are scheduled, while Buckminster of Lowell Machine Shop was badly scalded and will be disabled. Massachusetts Sunday School Association district meeting set at First Baptist with Rev J M Greene to speak on the Sunday school teacher's reward.
