Hobbs Man Sentenced for Fifth Felony Theft Conviction

Jack P. McCraw 34 was sentenced to life in prison by Judge John R. Brand after a jury found him a habitual criminal. He already served 2 1 2 to 3 years for burgling Tooties Cashway Market in Hobbs last June, his fifth felony. McCraw has prior convictions in Alabama Mississippi and North Carolina. He is unmarried and family details are unknown.

Lovington Leader Names New Reporter Flora Hood

Flora Hood of Albuquerque and Norfolk Virginia has joined The Leader as reporter and Society Editor. Hood brings experience from the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Board of Nursing in Albuquerque, and served as editor and writer of promotional literature at the State College of Washington in Pullman.

Bond Fixed For McCrary In Loving Break-In Case

Otis McCrary and Merlin Ainsworth faced three felony counts tied to the Loving Mercantile burglary. McCrary’s total bond was set at 10 000 with 5 000 on burglary and 2 500 on the other charges. Preliminary hearings scheduled for Sept 20 at 1 30 p m. both suspects remain jailed as McCrary fights a Supreme Court appeal over a burglary tools conviction.

Lea County Land Is Up For Lease in Upcoming Sale

The next monthly oil and gas lease sale offers 14 729 13 acres, mostly in Lea County, the smallest total in months. Of this 13 887 15 acres lie in Lea County, with 7 tracts totaling 12 706 26 acres for sealed bidding. Oral bids cover nine tracts totaling 2022 84 acres, all Lea County except one 80 acre tract in Chaves County.

Canning Exhibit Draws Large Local Participation

The fair’s canning division drew many locals with multiple first places. Winners include Mrs. S. S. Bell of Hobbs, Mrs. F. K. Turner of Monument, Mrs. Z. H. Campbell of Lovington, and others in categories from peaches to pickles and jams across Lovington, Hobbs, Crossroads, and Tatum.

Mrs. W. H. Dodson secretary to Sheriff Jewell McAdoo is in Lea County Hospital Hobbs with paralysis of right arm and leg after being stricken Saturday at home on the Lakes. A spinal test was made to check for polio.

Final Rites Held Sunday For Huneycutt Baby

Funeral services were held Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Smith-Yarbro Funeral Home Chapel for Billie Huneycutt infant son of Bennie and wife of 22 W Jackson. Officiating was Rev C G Wyatt of First Baptist Church. Billie born May 17 1954 died Sept 16 1954. Burial followed in Lovington Cemetery. Survived by parents and one brother and sister.

Lovington Kittens Open Season with 34–0 Victory

The Lovington Junior High Kittens opened their 1954 football season with a 34 to 0 win over Heizer Junior High of Hobbs. The line and backs dominated, led by Corbitt Hicks Blackwell Stell and blockers Allen Beattie Burks Collum Marler Patton Reece. They travel to Portales Junior High on Saturday Sept 25 for the next game.

FBI School Opens in Lea County Under Chief Westfall

Chief Westfall announced a two week FBI training for Lea County police starting October 4 at the Police Academy in Air Base City. The program includes recruit and in service training with topics on law, searches, reports, civil rights and firearms. The Lea County Fair displayed wide farm product variety with many exhibitors. Notable winners include Don Ray Lovington for lima beans and other crops, Homer Youngblood Lovington securing multiple firsts, and Ethel Yadon Lovington among top finishers across vegetables, grains, and produced goods.

Death claims Mrs Pearl Shelton

Mrs Pearl Josephine Shelton 54 died Sunday in a Hobbs hospital after a week as a patient. She came to Eunice three weeks ago to visit a daughter and son in law teachers in the Eunice School system with plans to make Eunice home. Born March 12 1900 in Little Rock Arkansas she had ill health for four years. Her remains were sent to Oklahoma City for services via Methodist Church tentatively set for 2 pm Tuesday. Survivors include three daughters Mrs Ernest Shelton Eunice Mrs Fred Buehler Long Island New York and Miss Norma Dean Shelton Eunice. two sisters Mrs Ted Shaver Tulsa and Mrs Clifford Baker Edmond. seven brothers Henry Turney Morton Texas John and Gid Turney Spigler Oklahoma Jim and Arthur Muskogee Oklahoma Ernest and Oscar Tulsa. Griffin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Agriculture Dept Records Record Loss in Price Support

The Agriculture Department reports a record loss of 419 million 477 074 dollars on price support operations for the fiscal year ended June 30. Investment in surplus crops stood at 6 billion 5 million 511 thousand dollars, up about 73 percent from the prior year. Loss arose from sales and donations of surplus below cost plus storage fees, versus a 61 million 146 358 dollar loss in 1953 and a 345 million dollar loss in 1951.

Voters Register During Lea County Fair Totals 102

At the Lea County Fair grounds a county registration booth logged 102 registrations. On Friday 27 voters registered and 50 registered on Saturday. Additional registrations are accepted at the County Clerk's office until October 4 with voting set for November 4.

Lea County Fair Stock Sales Hit $20904.49 in Record Year

The Lea County Fair reported total stock sales of 20904 49 in its latest County Agents office release. A record show with more county exhibitors and prizes than prior years. Over 16600 attended the three day fair closing night. Junior Fat Stock Show bidding was strong with numerous buyers and high prices for champion lambs calves and hogs. Names and top prices include Hammons Lovington 1st prize hog 18 00 to Leon Rice and Davis Lovington 1st heavy calf 608 30 to Lovington Co op Gin among many others. The event highlighted champions from Lovington Hobbs Tatum and nearby towns.
