Nowell Drug recovers after Thursday loss to Hobbs to defeat Morton 3 to 2, keeping Lovington alive in the tournament. Morton outhit 6 to 4 but Lovington capitalized on errors and timely hits, with Glover earning the win over Morton in five innings.
United Press reports in Raton that teachers are told education can aid the world crisis, ranking second only to our fighting soldiers. The message urges schools to train youth to be aware of the wartime duties.
Morton’s Hawkins Oldsmobile team crushed Clovis Redbirds 10 to 2, advancing with 13 hits while Clovis mustered 2. Gaudanos earned the win for Morton as Clovis’ tourney run ended after earlier losses to Hobbs. Artesia beat Denver City 4 to 2 in the other cited game.
Alice Jones sues Hazel Thompson for 50 dollars rent due at the Alice Hotel Hobbs plus 2000 dollars for accrued rent and 53 dollars for blankets. State Revenue Department figures show August retail sales reaching about 77 million dollars, with sales tax collections over 1.5 million dollars. Pete Ortiz, finance officer, says this is a record, surpassing January 1949 by roughly 30 thousand.
Attorney General Joe L. Martinez directs state liquor division director Tom Montoya to withdraw the recent liquor credit regulation and to hold a public hearing. The regulation would have halted liquor supplies to retailers unless all wholesaler bills were paid within 30 days of delivery.
New Mexico Baptists will build a $187000 headquarters in Albuquerque with S. V. Company as the low bidder.
A P Breckon of Tatum was in Lovington on Saturday on a business visit.
The State Fair Commission blocked a plan for nine horse races daily during the Albuquerque fair opening September 23. Racing will be eight per day with nine on the final Sunday. The extension to nine races was opposed by the commission after a meeting with the fair board. officials estimated the extra race could have yielded about $10,000 over the nine day meet.
James Kelly of Dayton runs one of the nation’s largest rare-coin businesses from a bank building suite. He notes value depends on circulation and condition, cites specific keys such as the 1916 standing Liberty quarter and 1909 Lincoln cent, and adds he travels to auctions and conventions to study the market.
Margie Robinson will enroll at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales this fall. She is the daughter of Mrs. OJella Robinson, the county school superintendent.

Artesia errors and hits tally 7 runs while Lovington totals 14 hits for the game.
Lovington suffers an 8 to 1 defeat to Hobbs after two wins. Glover yields six hits and eight runs allowed. Ray pitches a three hit, nine strikeout five walk effort for Hobbs. Lovington commits five errors, Hobbs four.
Ralph Lowe of Midland No 1 Dickenson in Lea County New Mexico reports a wildcat 17 miles north and slightly east of Lovington found oil and gas in commercial quantities in the Wolfcamp lime of the Lower Permian. A two hour drill stem test at 9170 to 9248 feet showed surface gas within 30 minutes. oil recovery reached 8600 feet of clean pipe line oil with no waste formation. Operators plan 40 more feet depth and another drill stem test.
Slight drop in marriage licenses issued last week with multiple couples listed across Texas and nearby states. Notable pairs include Robert Lee Law and Lola Ben Duncan, Hector Adis Vaught Jr. and Nella Wheat, and Cyril E. Smith with Mable Hughes among others from Hobbs Snyder Kermit and Dalford area communities.
West coast gambler Mickey Cohen vows to sue Texas officials after repeated removals from El Paso Fort Worth and Odessa on gambling probes. He laments Texas hospitality and notes plans to pursue legal action if advised by his attorney.

Hobbs police, the sheriff, and state patrol raided veteran and Elks clubs seizing new slot machines. VFW and American Legion members claimed machines were factory set with 13 percent profit and longstanding use. some machines were returned to factory for repairs.
