Fifteen Nations Back Western Germany Armament Pact

In Paris fifteen nations signed twelve documents forming a European defense union. The accord restores German sovereignty, ends allied occupation, and makes West Germany a 15th NATO member with a 500000 man army. Russia issued notes to the three Allied capitals on European security.

Little Tax Notices Soon To Be Mailed For 1954

County assessor staff completed assessment records and handed community books to the treasurer. For 1954, property owners will receive tax notices after the commissioners approve the warrant at the November 1 meeting. First half due December 1, second half due May 1, with 1 percent monthly interest on late payments.

Cotton To Get 90 Percent Support Next Year

Unofficial crop figures indicate the support price for cotton will stay at 90 percent of parity, with projections this level may continue in 1956. The farm act allows supports from 82 3 to 90 percent, replacing the old rigid 90 percent rule. The Agriculture Department will apply a formula tying higher supply to lower support.

Nunan Plans Fer of C Meet in Carlsbad

Nunan and Kaufman met in Carlsbad to finalize arrangements for the N M Chamber of Commerce Managers Association meeting set for November 4 5 and 6. Carlsbad officials quoted that Gov Mechem Land Commissioner Walker State Highway Engineer Erwin and Tourism Director Mayshark will attend along with U S Chamber of Commerce leaders James Roberts and Tom Watson from Dallas and Denver respectively.

A Lea County Wednesday roundup picked up several Mexican nationals, including a Hobbs worker who had married and fathered a child. Immigration officers transported a school bus full of Wetbacks to El Paso for deportation.

Fire Start From Lighted Match Sparks Gas Leak

Hobbs city firefighters rushed to 1151 West Marland at 5 p m Thursday to extinguish a blaze started by a lighted match. A buried gas line broke and gas surfaced, and attempting to locate the leak set the ground afire. No property damage was reported.

Sib Lewis Faces Court After Wreck and Drunk Driving

Sib Lewis appeared in Justice Court with head bandages and facial stitches after overturning a car on State Line road near Pauls Bar. He pleaded guilty to drunk driving and paid 100 dollars and 5 dollars costs. his license was suspended for a year. A woman named Linda Mauldin said her real name was Gladys Green and also pleaded guilty to intoxication, fined 50 dollars. Lewis is a farmer near Lovington.

Near Record Feed Crop Forecast Across Regions

The Agriculture Department forecast a near record 178 million tons of feed grains for 1954-55 and noted wide regional disparities with ample supplies in the north central area but critically short in much of the south and some Mountain states. Drought emergency programs are under way, corn supplies may lag requirements, and prices for oats barley and sorghums are expected to stay firm.
