Jack Woodward was rushed to Lea County Hospital after injuring his hand while working for the National Geo Physical Crew. The incident details remain unclear but his current condition is described as injured.
District Judge John R. Brand will preside as three cases are scheduled. Default matters will be heard and the jury docket will be set, marking a formal court convening date for the term.
Trading in New York and New Orleans shows July futures at 34.44 to 34.45, down 5 to 6 points, with October at 34.24 to 34.26, unchanged to up 2. In New Orleans July prices at 34.44, down 2 points, and October at 34.24 to 34.25, unchanged to up 1 point.
Polio cases reported this year in the state are below the numbers seen at the same time last year. Seven cases have been reported as against thirteen last year. In Lea County the New Mexico department of Public Health for May 15 shows two measles cases ten strep throat scarlet fever cases and one tuberculosis case in the preceding week.
Justice of Peace John W. Green fined Ed W. Shaner and Jesse Tomreck $15.00 each for speeding.
Lemeus R. Guest, a Hobbs teacher, sues for 1065.12 balance on a contract from March 1 to May 27 1954. The district says two payments were made and he was terminated May 18 1954 with base pay plus allowances and deductions for days not taught. Named defendants include Hobbs School Board members D C Badger C P Rudolph George Mansur Elmo Hutchinson and Hugh Smith.
Lea County residents report a rainy season with Hobbs recording three heavy showers and water several feet deep in Shortgrass Lake. Dal Paso and surrounding areas flood, roads slow at Lea Hospital, and railroad tracks remain bogged after last Thursday’s incident. Farmers fear crop replanting while ranchers see greener pastures.
Deputy Joe Pierce is moved to Eunice to replace R C Hayes who was discharged for disloyalty to the sheriff. Hayes on vacation, services end June 1. Tom White to replace Pierce at Tatum, previously with Hobbs police, later jailor for Charlie Trimble. A resident letter protests Hayes firing, urging economy and no Eunice deputy, claiming $500 monthly savings and noting dislike of the sheriff's department administration.
Arthur T. Proudfit of Creole Petroleum argues against House Bill 5894, saying curbs on Venezuelan oil imports would harm Chicago exporters and cost American jobs. He notes Venezuela buys U.S. goods and services and that oil aids U.S. war efforts, warning retaliation and a drop in two-way trade.
The Second Annual Water Carnival at Alamogordo Lake May 29 and 30 opens with a parade of boats at 1:00 PM Saturday. Cirque Daze performs nightly from 8:00 PM with a floating stage, while Queen contest prizes include a Hollywood trip. Fort Sumner girls compete for the crown and Clovis Rhythm Master plays Saturday night at the Air Base Hangar. Fort Sumner invites all to spend the holiday weekend at the lake.
KLEA plans to switch from 1050 to 630 kHz with tests due after midnight Wednesday and program test authorization sought from the FCC. The move will boost signal reach beyond 125 miles and make KLEA the third most powerful NM station behind Albuquerque outlets.
Glenn Russell Womack pled guilty to attempting to pass a $35 bogus check at the Owl Bar last week. He was arraigned before Justice of Peace John W. Green. The check, made out to Womack and signed by Cave, was attempted to be passed. He will appear before the District Judge later this week.
Socorro attorney Earl Douglas and opponent Manuel Miera tied with 562 votes each in the May 4 primary. Douglas declares he will not submit to a straw-draw gambling method to decide the Republican nomination and will pursue court action. Secretary Beatrice Roach notes state law requires a straw draw in ties.

Joan Patricia Hamilton 17 of Hobbs died Sunday when a 1954 Plymouth Tudor traveling west on U S Highway 180 near Carlsbad left the road, rolled 24 times after 22 feet of travel. Driver James Craig of Monument and two others injured. She recently graduated from Hobbs High School. Her funeral plans set at the Lutheran Church. Remaining burial in Bartlesville Oklahoma.
Former Hobbs police officer known as Shorty Jetton died in his sleep at about 2 30 a m Sunday. He lived in Lea County about 18 years and is survived by his mother three sons two daughters and several siblings. The body was moved from Green Chapel to Pilot Point Texas for burial in Indian Creek Cemetery Cook County Texas.
