A Friday fire gutted a feed storage building behind the A and A Feed Store in Lovington. Owner R A Gresham estimated losses above ten thousand dollars. Employee Don Tyra suffered first and second degree burns, treated at the Olvington Clinic, after a gasoline engine stalled and a flash fire erupted.
Two Hobbs residents, Cleta June Brown and Donald Wayne Huddleston, will be among 573 graduates at Texas Technological College on May 28. Degrees include 573 bachelor’s and 24 master’s. Dr. William H. Cowley of Stanford will deliver the keynote on American higher education at Jones Stadium.
At the Tuesday commission meeting City Manager Bill Harrison announced the firing of Patrolmen Bill Wigginton P Y Tidwell and Hershal Cunningham and accepted the resignation of acting chief Bill White. The board sat in stunned silence as the trio were dismissed following a beating accusation involving George Williams a Black convict. FBI investigators spent two days on the case and left without a clear report to officials or press.
Hobbs Police arrested six men Tuesday including one for drunk driving and license revocation, one for drunk and disorderly, and four for second offense drunkenness. Suspects include Charles G. Smith 35 of 607 E Dunham, Roy C. Smith 54 near 505 W Cain, Harold Clifford Snodgrass 45, Andrew B. Gibson 50, Clint M. Gilreath Hobbs, and Willis B. McNutt 53 of 409 E White.
City magistrate John Green heard two cases. Louis Chipman was fined $5 for running a stop sign and Ira Lewis Morgan paid $10 for failing to yield the right of way.
The House completed action on a compromise farm bill by a 304 to 59 vote and sent it to the White House. Republicans expect President Eisenhower to sign. This bill preserves the soil bank plan while removing rigid high supports from the earlier measure.
Bob Waggoner minister of Lovington Church of Christ received broken ribs in a car accident Tuesday night near Pep. He drove into a ditch when a boy rode a bicycle into his path. He was taken to Miller Hospital in Portales and is expected to return home today.
United Press report says Harry Truman rejected claims he called a Salerno commander the Squirrel Headed General in Italy. Eugene Bailey says the remark was not his boss's direct statement and may have been a joke relayed by a reporter.
Lovington city commission approved an ordinance to establish a five member planning board appointed by the mayor with commission approval. The board will draft a master growth plan, present it at public hearings, and its decisions may be overridden by the council. Members serve two year terms and the law takes effect after publication and a second approval.
Governor Simms names James Green of Hobbs as consultant and field man in the office of school budget auditor Homer Heathman. The new role will base in Santa Fe with work starting around June 1 and a monthly salary of $600. Green formerly served with the Hobbs School System.
A Kim bell Packing Company representative visited Lovington on Monday to scout a site for a possible canning plant. C. E. Smith led discussions with Leta County Vegetable Growers Association officials city leaders and County Agent James Gilstrap. Gilstrap said Smith seemed favorable about area prospects and promised an immediate decision. E. D. Reynolds and local leaders expressed optimism about the plan.
Tucumcari authorities accuse 50 year old Perfecto Aragon of directing his own children in a crime ring and holding him on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The George Gospel Trio from Hobbs New Mexico begin a revival at First Assembly of God Church 401 South Fourth from May 27 through June 10 with nightly preaching and special singing at 7 30 except Saturdays.
Grants authorities are rounding up eight boys accused of beating a local businessman. John Castelluccio says he lost his left eye in the attack at a Grants cafe. The District Attorney in Albuquerque received the complaint Tuesday. Castelluccio alleges police in Grants did nothing, and one attacker is the brother of a Grants officer while another is the son of the Grants police judge. Los Lunas Sheriff Medardo Sanchez pledges a complete impartial investigation as Grants officials express doubt.
O. T. Foil, owner of Sun Painting of Hobbs, says he plans to locate a Hobbs warehouse as a distribution point for Dal-Worth paints. He will run a wholesale operation serving the state while continuing painting contracting work.
A head on collision on Highway 180 east of La Mirada Hotel left three Hobbsons injured none seriously. B Vick 23 admitted to General Hospital for observation. Jim Mackovitch 17 and Crit C Choate 35 suffered minor contusions. Vehicles: a 1956 Chevrolet driven by Moris Henderson 16 and a 1956 Mercury driven by Choate. Henderson swerved to avoid the car ahead, causing the crash. Henderson held on provisional license. stepfather liable for his operation. father cited for allowing operation on the wrong side. Both cars demolished.
President Eisenhower defended the Democratic right of the armed forces to argue over defense matters while urging restraint to avoid alarming the nation. He urged officers to support the president's decisions once overall policy is set and warned that disrespect to commands is unfit for service. He noted economic strength, schools, and farms as key to national power, and commented on Soviet disarmament gestures and weapons sales to Saudi Arabia. He also said United States would continue cooperation with Egypt despite recognizing Red China.
