Shuffleboard ban ordered by Lea County DA

District Attorney Otis Haley ordered shuffleboards removed in Lea County arguing the game was used for gambling. The Ow Bar in Lovington already halted play and only the 200 Club at MacDonald remains in Haley’s area. In the past week several people faced $25 fines or jail for shuffleboard gambling as a small group of thugs was seen betting locally.

Lovington F. H. A. Hosts May Laundry Party

The Lovington Future Homemakers of America chapter held a May 7 gathering for 35 members including chapter mother Mrs. Carl Johnson and honorary member Mrs. C. E. Jackson. Shirley Flemons directed games and seniors received fortunes and favors. refreshments of soap and bluing were served. Officers for next year were elected: president Shirley Fremons, vice president Emma Jackson, secretary Jeanette Shirey, treasurer Margaret Tarry, reporter Imogene Johnson, historian Jerry Lou Camp, song leader Sharon Haldi men, and parliamentarian Wynette Greer.

Gil Haugen Elected Lovington Jaycees President

Gil Haugen is elected president of the Lovington Junior Chamber of Commerce. Elmer Winte is first vice president, Jerry Wright second vice president, Howard Howell secretary, Bill Humphrey treasurer, and Virgil Boteler director. Glen Werham named state director. Special meeting held Thursday May 7 at Lea County Electric Co op. Carlos Foster and L C Cozzens on nominating committee.

Agnes Kastner head of the Leader entered Lea General Hospital Sunday night and underwent major surgery Monday morning. She is resting well and will be unable to receive visitors for several days.

Starlight Theme for Junior Senior Banquet and Prom

Starlight was the theme of the Junior-Senior Banquet and prom held Saturday night at the high school library and Youth Center. Decorations included stars and a color changing moon, blue star paper walls, colonial silhouettes, a central white styrofoam star with blue mums and candles, and blue candlelit tables. The program spelled the theme with the initials and featured student performances and a dinner menu including Bird of Paradise and Stardust.

Fire whistle alarms Lovington volunteers Monday dawn

The fire whistle rang by itself in Lovington on Monday morning drawing many volunteer firefighters. The whistle blew for several minutes causing some residents to fear a major blaze nearby.

Twenty one Lea county boys left Wednesday morning for El Paso to take their physicals by chartered bus. They traveled to El Paso and returned the same day on Thursday.

Lovington High School Band Concert Directed by Pylman

John Pylman Jr. led Lovington Municipal schools in a Friday night concert featuring five bands with 225 students. The event showcased Fourth Grade Tonette and Senior High Varsity bands among others, drawing praise from the crowd and parents. Refreshments followed, served by the Band Parents Association chaired by Mrs. W. A. Anderson.
