The town of Lovington enacts fire safety measures targeting covered incinerators in designated zones. Officials stress proper containment and ongoing monitoring to prevent hazards, outlining compliance expectations for residents and businesses.
District Attorney Otis Haley ordered shuffleboards removed in Lea County arguing the game was used for gambling. The Ow Bar in Lovington already halted play and only the 200 Club at MacDonald remains in Haley’s area. In the past week several people faced $25 fines or jail for shuffleboard gambling as a small group of thugs was seen betting locally.
The Lovington Future Homemakers of America chapter held a May 7 gathering for 35 members including chapter mother Mrs. Carl Johnson and honorary member Mrs. C. E. Jackson. Shirley Flemons directed games and seniors received fortunes and favors. refreshments of soap and bluing were served. Officers for next year were elected: president Shirley Fremons, vice president Emma Jackson, secretary Jeanette Shirey, treasurer Margaret Tarry, reporter Imogene Johnson, historian Jerry Lou Camp, song leader Sharon Haldi men, and parliamentarian Wynette Greer.
Gil Haugen is elected president of the Lovington Junior Chamber of Commerce. Elmer Winte is first vice president, Jerry Wright second vice president, Howard Howell secretary, Bill Humphrey treasurer, and Virgil Boteler director. Glen Werham named state director. Special meeting held Thursday May 7 at Lea County Electric Co op. Carlos Foster and L C Cozzens on nominating committee.
A letter recounts a 1953- era Army tour from Mainz to Madrid via the Mediterranean and Holy Land. It notes a 57 year old Army nurse, a 57 year old lieutenant colonel, shared rooms with Tom Buckley of New York, flight details from Mainz through Munich Barcelona and Madrid, early arrivals, hotel stays including the Hotel Muncher Hof and Hotel Grillon, currency rates at 39 pesetas per dollar, and Easter holiday crowds at Madrid airport.
Names of jurors for the June term of district court were drawn Monday morning. Thirty six named for the regular panel and eighteen for the emergency panel, listing jurors from Hobbs Loving ton Tatum Caprock Eunice Jal Oil Center Buckeye Knowles Cross Roads and other towns.
The Girl Scout Campaign Fund remains below its $1500 goal and asks uncontacted potential donors to mail or deliver contributions to support the drive.
Five Lea County officials attended the state convention of county officials in Albuquerque over the weekend and returned today. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tatum, Mrs. Eva Tatum as county clerk, and commissioners George Blocker and Carl Denson.
Mrs. Ita Blackman and her daughter Babs of Lovington visited Mrs. G. H. Rennels, Ita Blackman’s mother, over the weekend in Stamford, Texas.
Agnes Kastner head of the Leader entered Lea General Hospital Sunday night and underwent major surgery Monday morning. She is resting well and will be unable to receive visitors for several days.
Starlight was the theme of the Junior-Senior Banquet and prom held Saturday night at the high school library and Youth Center. Decorations included stars and a color changing moon, blue star paper walls, colonial silhouettes, a central white styrofoam star with blue mums and candles, and blue candlelit tables. The program spelled the theme with the initials and featured student performances and a dinner menu including Bird of Paradise and Stardust.
The fire whistle rang by itself in Lovington on Monday morning drawing many volunteer firefighters. The whistle blew for several minutes causing some residents to fear a major blaze nearby.
Twenty one Lea county boys left Wednesday morning for El Paso to take their physicals by chartered bus. They traveled to El Paso and returned the same day on Thursday.
Mr and Mrs Carl Johnson visited Roswell on Thursday May 7 to join Mrs J J Lane as she marked her 69th birthday. Also present were two of Mrs Johns sisters at the family gathering.
John Pylman Jr. led Lovington Municipal schools in a Friday night concert featuring five bands with 225 students. The event showcased Fourth Grade Tonette and Senior High Varsity bands among others, drawing praise from the crowd and parents. Refreshments followed, served by the Band Parents Association chaired by Mrs. W. A. Anderson.
Lovington selects Mrs. Mary S Hooper as the number one mother for 1953 after a radio program on KLEA hosted by Butler Sumner. Frances Gillett and Mrs. Nellye Taylor also featured as part of a Mother's Day tribute with gifts from local businesses and sponsors.
Mrs. Nancy Burns of Tatum addressed a Democratic women meeting at Crossroads hosted by State Democratic Committeewoman Mrs. A. D. Sawyer. A luncheon followed and Burns spoke on Communism. A tacky party is planned for May 27 at Mrs. Ray Patterson's home in Tatum. Attendees included O. T.
