Young Hobbs Girl Faces Luck With Graduation Help

In Hobbs, Joan Youngblood, daughter of D. J. and Mrs. Youngblood, endured a string of misfortunes from November 1955 to April 1956 starting with a stolen school locker and extending to a broken leg after a fall in home economics class. Griff Funeral Home will transport her to graduation so she does not miss her milestone. The New Mexico Employment Security Commission forecasts a 30 day employment upswing in Hobbs and Lea County with 20,700 workers as of March 15 and shortages in skilled trades. Nationwide, non farm payrolls rose to 183,900 by mid March with 3,321 job openings statewide in March.

El Paso Spelling Bee Winner Earns D C Trip

Annette Pruitt an eighth grader from Lovington Junior High won the Herain Post Southwestern Championship Spelling Bee in El Paso. She spelled divisive and permissible in the 43rd round to clinch the title and a trip to Washington D C. Sixty six spellers gathered at El Paso High School for the contest first session.

Local Firm Wins 16 Mile Road Project Contract

The State Highway Commission opened bids on nine projects at Santa Fe. Harry Trotz Company of Lovington won the 16 mile State Highway 467 segment from Clovis Air Force Base to Portales with a bid of 223000 dollars.

Oil Center Couple Escapes Injury After Car Accident

A couple from Oil Center escaped injury when their car overturned four miles south of Monument at 1 30 a m Sunday. State Policeman Hoover Wimberly identified the driver as Mrs Mable Hanson Akin 48 and listed her husband H H Akin as a passenger.

Maljamar Woman Missing Three Days

Jeane Randell of Maljamar has been missing since Saturday morning after leaving with a postman to visit a doctor in Lovington. Her husband, Leon Randell, says she left wearing a brown checkered dress and horn rimmed glasses and has had no word since. Two children await news as Lea County authorities and the husband ask anyone with information to contact Lovington or the Lea County Sheriff's office.

Colier Enters Constable Race in Lovington

Iiam F. Collier announces his candidacy for Constable of Precinct 8 Lovington subject to the Democratic primary next Tuesday. Collier cites his law enforcement background including former chief of police roles in Eldorado and Sayer Oklahoma and deputy sheriff posts in Burkburnett and Pratt.

Final Services Tuesday For Mrs. Jerry Clayton

Mrs. Mary Clayton 53 of Lovington died April 30 at Seé General Hospital Hobbs. She married Jerry Clayton in 1924 and was born in Cameron Texas. Survived by husband two daughters and four grandchildren. Services 11 a.m. May 1 at Lovington Methodist Church with Rev John Haverland and Jordan Grooms. Burial Lovington Cemetery. Barkley Dies at 78 After Address in Lexington

Former Vice President and Kentucky senator Alben Barkley collapsed and died at 5 30 p m Eastern Time while addressing Washington and Lee University students in Lexington Virginia. He was 78 years old.

Dad Barton Dies at 80 in Hobbs Texas

William Elpert Barton known as Dad Barton age eighty died after a long illness in a local hospital. He lived with daughter Mrs. Johnnie Meinecke in Hobbs. He came to Hobbs in 1940 from Tolar Texas and earlier worked as a stock farmer and state cattle inspector near Fort Worth. Survived by two sons a brother a sister three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral April 30 at 2 p m in Tolar Methodist Church with burial in Ashbury Cemetery. Green Funeral Chapel Hobbs handled arrangements.

Marble Tournament Set in Hobbs May 5 at VFW Hall

The Hobbs VFW will host an annual marble tournament on May 5 at 1800 North Turner. All boys through age 14 may enter starting at 9 am. The local winner advances to the Albuquerque Department Tournament and then to the National Tournament with a Paris trip for the national champion.
