Residents of Lovington and Lea County are urged to attend two art exhibitions at Lovington Schools this weekend. An exhibit of watercolors by 12 prominent artists is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, followed by the Lewis exhibit on Monday afternoon.
Gubernatorial candidate Ingram Pickett says State Police Chief Beasley refused his request for around the clock protection at the statehouse. Three officers could not be spared, he was told, and he was advised to seek Santa Fe city police. Pickett stood outside the capitol to file for the Democratic primary ballot.
Beecher Martin and Dwane Swafford announce a Lovington Piggly Wiggly to replace Farmers Food Market in a new building north of the current site. The home owned business will join Piggly Wiggly franchise benefits with chain-store discounts. Expected opening around May 1. Piggly Wiggly operates in 40 states plus Hawaii Canada and Alaska.
Ingram Pickett, a seven foot candidate for governor, unveils an 11 point plan to reshape New Mexico government. Proposals include a seven member cabinet, run off primaries, safety program, a New Mexico Hoover Commission, lower rates, annual grand juries, abolishing the public service commission, a constitutional convention, weekly public reports, state car reductions with pools, and strict dollar for dollar administration.
John W. Green announced a new location for selling driver s licenses. Licenses will be on sale at the Keith Gas Co office south of the Mesa Theater. Green will be available there during office hours for license sales and notary work.
Lea County census preparations include a March 27 training session in Hobbs at Humble Recreation Hall for Lea County enumerators. The 1940-like statewide census begins April 3 with about 14 000 enumerators and staff across nine counties including Chaves Curry De Baca Roosevelt Lincoln Otero Dona Ana Lea and Eddy.
Mrs John Love announces in a written statement that her husband John Love is in the race for Lea County Tax Assessor. Love is a former assessor who left office in 1946 when Frank Smith was elected. he has been working in the state capital and returned to Lovington to campaign two weeks ago.
Santa Fe report from the Department of Health shows January births at 1200 versus 1719 in 1949 and deaths dropping from 527 to 408. Infant deaths under one year decline from 122 to 77 with cancer listed as the leading cause among reportable diseases at 33 deaths.
The League of Women Voters of New Mexco will hold a two day meeting in Los Alamos on March 20 and 21 to organize plans for the first state convention in May. Citizens of Los Alamos are acknowledged as the newest group of voters contributing to the state’s civic efforts.
C F Adams of the Federal Land Bank will address the Lea County N F L A stockholders meeting at the Presbyterian Church Lovington on March 23, 1950. The event starts at 10 00 am with a free dinner at 12 30 pm. a strong program targets farmers and ranchers and invites neighbors.
The Taxpayers Association of New Mexico and the Hoover Commission group will host a public meeting in Albuquerque on March 29 with John Rudisill of the Tax Foundation of New York as speaker. He will discuss Hoover Commission recommendations and also address the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association on March 28 in Albuquerque.
Long list of witnesses including J D Heath C C Johnson Terrell St Clair W rugad and Hattie Shield named in subpoenas. Service sought Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning with resubmission set for 10 o clock in Clovis on March 16.
Lea County Republicans held a meeting at Hobbs City Hall where John Knorr urged boosting the 1950 vote by 1,200 and adding 200 workers. L George Schubert was nominated for chairman with Mrs Seth Alston as vice chair and regional officials named to the state central committee.
In Santa Fe supporters of Representative John E. Miles push for a comeback as Ingram Pickett camps on the state house steps aiming to lead the gubernatorial ticket on filing day April 4. Miles backers say Pickett changes the race while Chavez candidates loom. John F. Simms Jr. has ruled himself out.
In York Nebraska the York News-Times sent a reporter to the countryside to gauge farmers conditions in freezing weather. The first farmer wife interviewed spoiled the piece by saying her electric blanket was uncomfortably warm the previous night.
Miss Pat Lee daughter of Mr and Mrs R L Lee is seriously ill in Presbyterian Hospital Albuquerque Pat is a student at the University of New Mexco and the Lees are in Albuquerque with her.
Mrs. W. A. Fleming opens a home nursery two blocks west of Woodward’s Auto Supply. It offers hourly or daily care with possible multi day arrangements. Visitors may tour the facility from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The New Mexico Republican Party adopts a resolution condemning the Democratic machine in Santa Fe. It accuses state officials of corruption, conflicts of interest, and political interference in jobs, taxes, and public services, calling for a complete house cleaning.
