Everett Grantham, chairman of the New Mexico State Police Board of Commissioners, says the State Police are soliciting applications for recruits to the next Recruit Training School to be held by May 15. Eligible men ages 23 to 35, at least 5'10", with a high school diploma and two years as a New Mexico resident, may apply. Starting pay $300 monthly, with raises to $440 after ten years. opportunities for promotion to sergeant and captain. retirement after 25 years or at 55. A $20 clothing allowance and sustenance while away from duty are provided. Applications requested by mail from Santa Fe headquarters.
Mrs. June Knight of Jal is named nurse for Lea County. She will cover the county until Miss Beryl Kaiger returns, then serve the southern area. Knight passed merit exams and will be paid 270 dollars monthly plus six cents per mile. Weekly clinics start Thursday at the Health Center in the Lea County Hospital Building, Hobbs.
Hollie Smith issued a call for metal pipe donations to build bleachers and backstops at the Little League and Pony League ballparks. Wanted are two and three inch pipe, usable or scrap, short pieces welcomed.
Lea County Hospital board members and county commissioner met to discuss future plans including a laundry, intercom, nurses home, administrator residence, and surgeon instrument pay. The hospital reported profit and unspent July budget. no action was taken and no donations were requested.
Peggy Cleveland a 14 year old runaway from Monahans Texas returned home with her mother Wednesday morning after being arrested earlier and placed in jail awaiting arrival. Juvenile officer Les Villers reported the girl refused to sit down and said she would not go to jail unless the boy she was with also went to jail. The mother Bonnie Cleveland of Wickett Texas said Peggy rode the bus to school and had no prior trouble with her brood of eight in Lovington.
Mrs Lula Summitt, longtime Hobbs resident and former operator of the Big Four Tourists Camp, is resting after surgery for a fractured left hip at Lea County Hospital Hobbs. She lives at 120 S Dal Paso.
A. V. Smith of Lovington was the sole bidder for the road department project near Jal. The county commissioners awarded him the contract to supply 46,854 lineal feet of fencing for a total of $4,618.10.
The May primary filing closed at 5 pm Tuesday with a flurry of late entries. In Santa Fe the Democratic governor candidate list grew as Robert F. Stephens entered against John F. Simms and Ingram B. Pickett, possibly weakening Pickett against the incumbent. Lieutenant governor had no filing fee and saw no opposition to Fred Standley after Richard H. Robinson left the race for Congress. Frank B. Zinn was expected to join as a Democrat. Republican Thomas J. McKenna and Standley will clash in the November general election.
State wide alert issued for two 14 year old Hobbs youths believed linked to a 1500 dollar blaze that damaged the Ann Tidwell home and gutted an unoccupied house at 314 316 North Fifth Street. Firefighters battled the blaze for two hours using a booster line. Police and fire officials questioned one boy who had earlier been in the houses. Another fire at 401 East Corbett, blamed on an overheated furnace, damaged four rooms.
Police investigate a Tuesday night shooting in Eunice after Dolores Crowley was shot in the left leg during a scuffle with Richard Flippen who said the gun discharged accidentally while he tried to disarm her. Crowley was taken to Lea General Hospital by A. P. Faulkner.
The Joe Causey road south of Hobbs on the Eunice Highway was ordered opened by the Lea County Commissioners after a petition from ranchers and farmers. Kermit Nash said the road had been closed without reason for cattle guard work and to let school buses use it again.
Governor John F. Simms announced an energetic precinct level campaign after filing for re election. Opponent Ingram B. Pickett appeared with 750 borrowed dollars while claiming 25 dollars in his own campaign fund. Simms said Eisenhower and Mechem entry will solidify the Democratic race and favored competition over “hotel room” GOP selections.
The Secretary of State saw the busiest day as candidates filed for November 6 general election offices with May 8 primaries. Nominees include Ralph C. Smith and Forrest Atchley among Republicans for Congress. incumbents J. J. Dempsey and A. M. Fernandez among Democrats. Richard H. Robinson among Democrats. Governors nominees include Edwin L. Mechem and incumbents Pickett Stephens Simms. Statewide filings list candidates for Lieutenant Governor Montoya Woolston Smith Hubbell. Secretary of State Buck and Quinlama. State Auditor Hannah and Chavez. State Treasurer Moses and Grant. Attorney General Standley and McKenna. School Superintendent Lusk and Foraker. Land Commissioner Morgan Miles Wortman. Corporation Commission Abell and Meador Cross Block Junior Calderon Junior Sturges Robinson Rodgers. Supreme Court Wilson and Compton. District Judges McCullough Oman McPherson Tackett Walker.

Angie Oliveraz, 14, was struck by a car driven by Mrs. J. P. Carre in the 300 block on West Jefferson. He was rushed to the Lovington Clinic with injuries to his leg and several bruises.
Hobbs policeman Charles Blackie Hardy was described as in good condition by Lea General Hospital officials on Wednesday after being shot outside a Hobbs home early Saturday morning. His wife Margaret Hardy remains jailed on assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill charges in the case, bond set at 2500 dollars. The couple had argued over his alleged infidelity, according to police.
The hubcap toll for Hobbs District basketball tournament games mounted with two more thefts reported to police on Monday. Earlier, at least ten hubcaps had been stolen from cars Friday and Saturday near Eagle Gym. Donald D. Hallam, Hobbs City Attorney, said four hubcaps were taken from his Cadillac and Kern Aldridge reported two from a 1956 Dodge. Police have yet to locate any stolen merchandise as investigators seek suspects.
Tatum officials led by Supt W D Castor and Principal W S Clary asked County Commissioners to approve a five mill levy on local property to build a medical clinic. District Attorney Pat Hanagan and Atty Kermit Nash said they would study the request. Castor warned of a $100 000 school budget plan to fund and lease a clinic if the levy fails.
At the request of J. Edgar Barker of the Fish and Wildlife Department the county will pay 1050 dollars for six months salary for a trapper Forrest Groffitt has been hired to trap coyotes foxes and other predatory animals with the state covering the remaining six months.
Mrs Harold Johnson of 1201 West Madison reported to the sheriff that her sons located several milk crates in the street prompting a local inquiry. Local authorities investigated the sighting and ensured the area remained safe.
J. P. Candidate Henington a World War II veteran and First Baptist Church member is vying for local support in Lovington. A four year old arrival, 1937 high school graduate, Pomona College attendee and law student by correspondence seeks New Mexico Bar admission with the American Bar Association appeal active. He says his opponent is a fine man and urges voters to choose friendship over votes.
Hobbs voters approved a 1.2 million dollar school bond in a special election with 462 in favor and 23 opposed. Funds will finance a central kitchen cafeteria system a 2000 seat high school auditorium and purchase of new school sites. Will Rogers Elementary 349 in favor eight opposed Monument one in favor four opposed Edison 112 in favor 11 opposed.
New Mexico Department of Public Welfare announces free Salk polio vaccine for children of Public Assistance recipients. Eligible ages are up to 19. Inquiries at any Health Department clinic or County Health Department office to learn inoculation times. Previously a pay form was required. that requirement is now eliminated.
County Clerk records disclose a flurry of filings across Lea County on Tuesday. Eunice and Lovington lead with multiple candidates for probate judge county commissioner state senate justice of peace and various precinct posts amid several incumbents seeking re election.
