After four months the Lovington Hobbs highway shows no more carcasses as the State Patrolmen and local officials dispute responsibility for removing the dead animals. The State Health Department and others deny accountability, while the Attorney General later ruled patrolmen were responsible. No one admits removing them.
President William Green of the AFL told Congress that unless social security benefits are liberalized unions will launch a drive for security via collective bargaining. He urged the Senate Finance Committee to approve bills expanding local benefits and coverage, warning a vacuum exists if reform is not adopted.
Hobbs High School principal Ross Kendall returned from a Santa Fe meeting of state elementary and secondary school administrators where he spoke on the program. He attended a dinner at the Mayflower cafe with other principals as R. R. Lewis of Deming led the programs. Speakers included Travis Stovall Artesia Dr W H Ivins UNM Kendall and R P Sweeney of the department of education.
Lez and Elson from Hobbs and Monument lead a group of ten Air ROTC cadets at New Mexico A&M College for high academic records leadership and extracurriculars. Awards given by Lt. Col. Hartline. Burr E Porter Co. dba Tex Leathercraft Co. sues Pender Dept. Store for 306 dollars plus interest and costs filed March 1.
The International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers says the Hobbs employment office has closed to 400 Carlsbad strikers after the potash dispute ended. The blacklist allegedly extends to Hobbs Portales Clovis and Roswell areas, with workers finding inferior jobs or being discharged once labeled union men.
District Court Judge Roy C. Anderson issued several judgments Friday. Violet Polyak received 457 53 with 10 percent interest to be paid from J L Ferguson plus 45 for attorney fees and 14 25 costs. A H Nutt was granted quiet title on property and Ada E Thomas v J L Thomas also quiet title. Lee Durham and First National Bank of Hobbs were awarded 2350 with 5 percent interest from E T Wall. Robert Franklin earned 500 88 and 10 percent interest plus 100 in attorney fees from Matt Lewis of Hobbs.
District Judge Roy C. Anderson sentenced five defendants to the state penitentiary with suspended portions. Mood pleaded guilty to motor vehicle without owner’s consent and drew 12 months with suspended portions. Phillip Green pled guilty to grand larceny and received 190 days to years with most suspended. Glen Combes admitted guilt and drew 12 to 18 months. William Maynard and John Holbrook pled guilty to breaking and entering in the night. Maynard got 18 to 24 months, Holbrook 18 to 24 months. Sheriff Owens to transfer prisoners to Santa Fe.
Judge Roy C Ander son granted six divorces in a two hour court session. Eight were arraigned and several default cases heard. Marrell Hennington and Bellie Jean Henning ton were divorced, as were Rachel L Skidmore from R L Skidmore with custody of two minor sons. Nadine White divorced Clayton White with custody of two minors. John T Novick divorced Dorothy N Novick with custody to the mother. William B Chrt hs vs Janay Corieeh MAD She NGO Orme Lambert received divorce from Viola Lambert.
Paul S Brown former Lea County Commissioner and Hobbs School Board member said he would run for state representative if enough people want him. He noted one definite vote and worried his wife would be left home with four children in Hobbs while he would be in Santa Fe. He aims to ensure Lea County gains full representation in the legislature, marking the first time Lea and Eddy counties share a representative. The state senator seat remains shared with Eddy County, with full Lea representation not before 1952.
J. B. Burleson of Hobbs former head of Empire Insurance Agency pleads not guilty at arraignment before Judge Roy C. Anderson. Bond set at 3000 dollars. He has remained in Lea County Jail since arrest in early February on embezzlement charges.
Eugene Allen charged with grand larceny did not appear for arraignment before Judge Anderson on Friday. No reasons were given for his absence.
Lovington collected 12505.58 dollars from municipal gasoline taxes last year. New Mexico municipalities as a group gathered 579803 dollars in 1949, up from 847996 in 1948, with a 192103 dollar increase. The notes mention First Territorial Bank officers Oscar Thompson J D Hart and J S Eaves several local scenes including school reports dances and a Christmas dinner by the Lovington hotel. Martha Murry Daniels filed a suit for divorce on March 2 from R. W. Bill Daniels Jr. of Hobbs. They married May 2, 1942 and separated February 23, 1950 with no children and a community property settlement. Mrs Daniels requests restoration of her maiden name. Daniels runs an insurance business in Hobbs and is president of the Hobbs Lions Club.
Judge Roy C. Anderson appoints A. M. Swarthout to represent Jessie Bailey in a preliminary hearing on murder charges.
Two men are held in Lincoln County Jail Carrizozo linked to the murder of ranch foreman Pierre Nalda near Santa Rosa. Officers say robbery was motive and that Nalda was killed after being forced to sign four blank checks.
Lou Griffin has filed a divorce suit and requests custody of her children. The filing details the dissolution of marriage and seeks judicial determination of custody arrangements.
