Funeral services were held at Smith- Yarbro Chapel for Rufus Woods 74 a ranch worker who died Monday night on the Herman Culp ranch near Caprock. Burial was in Lovington cemetery. Inquest found death from natural causes. Survivors include a sister and two nieces.

Porter Shoals Wounded in Hobbs Shooting
Preliminary hearing for Fred Birkley of Hobbs on assault with intent to kill was set for 10:30 a m Thursday before Judge Bob Bensing. Birkley is charged after Porter Shoals, also of Hobbs, was seriously wounded on East Humble street when a .38 short bullet struck him. Shoals was in Lea General Hospital with internal bleeding and a damaged lung, with investigators noting the firing followed a dispute over money owed. Birkley, intoxicated at the time, was detained after surrendering within 20 minutes. he has been jailed on a 2500 bond.
