Migrant Labor Treaty to be Renewed Despite Previous Notice

Mexican government officials say the migrant labor treaty with the United States will be renewed on June 25, despite Mexico serving notice last week that the pact could terminate July 15. The treaty allows Mexican farm workers to be hired by American farmers. Officials expect action in Washington soon to salvage the agreement or sign a new one.

Final Rites for Dr James M Purcell in Hobbs

Requiem mass for Dr James Michael Purcell address 408 Temple Drive Southern Heights was held at St Helena Catholic Church with Rosary at Green Chapel. The 42 year old dentist died near midnight Monday and burial will be in Santa Fe. He helped organize Hobbs Knights of Columbus and served as a trustee. He belonged to Elks Club and American Legion. Survivors include his wife Patricia Lynn 15 daughter and two sons James Michael Jr and Edward Milton 11. His father and sister live in Santa Fe. his mother recently died there.

Old Folks Day reunion planned at Prairieview School

Lovington Leader reports Old Folks Day Sunday June 24 at Prairieview School. Activities begin 10 am for those over 60 with registration and an attendance prize. Prizes, gifts, and lunch under trees plus photos by Leader photographer. Donations welcomed to cover barbecue costs.

The REA board held a Saturday meeting at the REA offices with all members present led by Chairman Kyle Taylor. G T Hanners resigns as attorney and Harvey Markley is appointed legal advisor. Lempke Construction Co of Albuquerque is noted for a cracked engine foundation issue and contract terms.

Privitts Found Not Guilty In Hobbs Killing Case

A Lea County District Court jury acquitted William Privitt after 25 minutes of deliberation in a gambling raid fatality. Privitt testified Bert Batman, a state witness, bumped his hand causing a shot that killed 32 year old Willie Carter during the February raid on a Hobbs dice game. Batman suffered powder burns corroborating Privitt s account.

Road Through Lovington to Get Paved on State Highway 13

The State Highway Commission awarded 10 highway contracts totaling over a million dollars. One job in Lea County, a one mile resurfacing on Highway 13 through Lovington, went to G. L. Martin of Albuquerque for 39000 dollars.

Beadles of Beef Control Hit By Congressional Edits

Congressional committees moved to trim the price control program defeating hopes for further beef price rollbacks this fall. The senate banking committee outlawed additional beef price cuts while extending wage and price controls for eight months and defense act provisions for a year. House banking committee also canceled beef rollbacks, signaling the administration’s tougher controls face likely defeat in Congress. Farmers sent livestock to market in near normal quantities as beef prices fell further. The House is expected to debate a seven billion dollar increase in the federal budget, with a take it or leave it approach and no amendments unless approved by the committee.

Grand Canyon Guides Fall From Cliff In Fatal Accident

Lee Roberts and his boss Lee Smith, acting as guides, tumbled from a narrow Grand Canyon trail after a mule pressured them over a cliff. Smith died, Roberts was injured. the incident occurred Sunday, June 17. Mrs. Roberts is the daughter of Mrs. J. B. Love. Mr. and Mrs. Keeton Roberts of Cloudcroft are with them. Roberts, a former resident, was released from Grand Canyon hospital within days.

Jack Danglade a Lea County New Mexico oil operator was unanimously chosen president of the Youth Center Committee. He presided from his North Main Street office in the Dangla Building and outlined plans for the upcoming summit.

Nowell Drug bowed to the Fuel Boys for the fifth defeat of the season on Tuesday night June 19. A new Lovington board of trustees meeting at Richards Motor Company elected Jack Danglade as trustee and president, with Leonard Richards as vice president and Joel Burns as treasurer, to take office July 1. Maljamar stretched its undefeated streak with an 8th straight win as the Lions suffered another setback, 15 to 10. REA Truck Turned Over In Wreck Between REA Ford and Mercury

A collision Tuesday night June 19 at 10 oclock between a REA Ford truck driven by Herman Robinson Jr with Kenneth Scroggins and a Mercury driven by Leon Like from Lovington caused the truck to overturn after the Mercury hit its rear at the old light plant. No injuries were reported and damage estimates were not released.

UN Air Losses Reported in Korean War

The United States Far East Naval Command disclosed that about 300 UN naval and marine aircraft were lost since the war began. The review of UN naval actions noted ships and planes from 11 nations inflicted 57,000 enemy troop casualties and dropped 35,000 tons of high explosives.

Extension Service appoints Nebraskan as new editor

Duane I. Nelson named assistant extension editor at New Mexico A&M College. He previously directed farm services for radio station KRVN in Nebraska and served as assistant extension editor at the University of Nebraska from 1946 to 1961. Nelson will help edit publications, write articles, and train county agents.
