The Lovington Leader notes the Softball League will award a consolation trophy to the team finishing last this year. The gesture aims to honor effort for boys with hard luck or limited play. Prizes also go to outstanding player, best team, and Junior division winner.
Lovington Public Library adds Let Love Come Last Father of the Bride Off to College Spanish English Dictionary and more as summer reading options. The Lions beat Humble 11 to 9 in seven innings in their return to the new Lions Softball Field with Lowman pitching eight innings and Hazen tallying two hits and three walks. The Tatum Amerada game followed with a high scoring, error filled contest before being called in the sixth inning.
The Lovington Leader notes the annual Old Folks Reunion to be held Sunday June 25 at Prairieview School House. About 150 to 200 seniors plus families expected, with total crowd over 300. Prizes to oldest man and woman, longest-married couple, farthest attendee, and next 10 oldest. a new prize for 1950. Stephen Dupree of Brownfield, Texas, age 104, expected to attend if weather allows. He is featured in Life Magazine with Civil War veterans. A memorial will be read in
Since June 1949 Old Folks Day in Lea County honors members who have passed. E. L. Harbison and O. B. Powell couples are praised for organizing the event. The day includes prayers, singing, and a noon din ner for attendees over 60, with a free will offering to cover expenses. A free ride by bus from the Courthouse area to Prairie View and back is provided.
The Lovington unit raised 222.96 from the Poppy Day sale on May 27 to fund veteran rehabilitation. Funds stay locally after poppies purchase and a cut to National HQ. An adopted Buddy at the Albuquerque VA writes of needs including clothing and razor blades, thanking contributors and listing workers in Mallamar and Buckeye.
Rumors say Joe Black, runner up for a sheriff nomination in Lea County, may file a contest or request a recount. Targets include two race boxes with alleged irregularities at 18 A and at an address other than the polls. The Leader could not reach Black for comment.
Two Lovington boys Eddie Hooper and Gene Woodard won elections at the New Mexico State general elections on Wednesday June 7 Hooper was elected land commissioner and Woodard will represent Lovington in the senate They were inaugurated on June 8 with John F Simms speaker of the New Mexico House and Calvin Horn attending the ceremony.
Cliff Chambers a Negro of Lovington is bound over to district court on forgery charges after a preliminary before Justice Sidney Reeves. Jessie Lee Willis known as Tenderfoot is bound over for armed robbery of H V Wright, an elderly bedfast resident, and tied to the Robin Roberson murder case in Hobbs. Neither has legal representation at the Lovington proceeding.
A series of divorce and related suits fill the docket in D C this week. Filings include Mrs A F Blakely seeking judgment against Ernest Bridges 1050 plus 31 50 interest and 110 attorney fees with 6 percent interest. June 8 Charlie D Thompson seeks divorce from Osa Mae Thompson with restraining order and property settlement.
The State Highway Commission let road contracts totaling about 950000 for 75 miles of six New Mexico roads. Albuquerque firm Skousen Hise Company was the low bidder in Lea County with a 36756 bid to rebuild 6.6 miles of State Highway 294 between Tatum and Texas Line.
Sheriff Horace Burl Owens announces a meeting of the State Democratic Central Committee in Albuquerque. John E. Miles, former state chairman and governor nominee in June, is expected to take over the state organization with Ray Rodgers as chairman. the executive board will also meet.
J. T. Thomas new owner changes Helvey Cafe to Thomas Cafe in Lovington. He moved from Eunice and runs the cafe next to the Fox Super Market.
The preliminary hearing for Albert Mitchell known as Shirts and two Hobbs associates is postponed past the last week of June. Attorneys Melvin Neal and L George Schubert will be unavailable abroad, delaying proceedings until after the July term opens June 19 with Judge George T. Harris presiding.
Martha Ruth Larry a 19 month old child of Mr and Mrs James Larry of 112 E Texas died by strangulation while visiting in Monahans Texas The infant was buried in the Colored Cemetery here on June 11 Graveside services were conducted by Griffin Funeral Home with a Methodist minister officiating The death occurred after the child fell and became caught between a bed rail and the wall while the mother and friends were away.
Forty six attended Sunday School at the First Assembly of God Church. Evangelist Sister Ortha Jones of Portland Oregon will hold a revival at the church starting June 25.
Frank Nelson of Nelson and Green F L Griffin of Griffin Funeral Home Hobbs and E B Yarbro of Smith Yarbro Lovington attended the convention of funeral directors and embalmers in Albuquerque this week. Griffin and Yarbro traveled together.
Mr and Mrs Cecil Lee and Mrs L A Smith and children attended the dedication of Camp Scott Abel near Weed New Mexico last weekend.
Larry Crouse director of the Lovington Public Schools summer program reports 110 registered on opening day Monday June 12. The free program runs 9 to 4 with noon to 1 lunch. swimming requires pool admission. Fifty two registrants joined the Beginner's Swimming Class.
President Roy Forehand of the New Mexico Cattlegrowers Association says the group will discuss the state's rainmaking program at their June 29 and 30 meeting in Carlsbad. Invited speakers include Dr. E J Workman Irving Langmuir and Bud Williams. The agenda also covers a new tax revaluation program and Hal Rex heads the resolution committee. More than 500 members expected.
The Lea County Community Hospital opened on Monday with nine patients transferred from the General Hospital. A large inspection tour followed a Saturday dinner for county businessmen and donors attended by prominent women. The first baby arrived Tuesday morning and twins Tuesday afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Dick Schenck attended the University of Oklahoma graduation in Norman where their son Kirby Dick Schenck earned a B A in Petroleum Engineering He then left for Wichita Falls to begin as a Petroleum Engineer with Reno Oil Co Mrs Schenck and daughter Martha Lee accompanied them for a short visit before the family headed to Wichita Falls
Two Albuquerque businessmen Walter R. Zener an insurance agency operator and Clarence Speck Sullins an auto repair service manager were killed when their four seat private plane crashed near Conway Texas yesterday morning. They were en route to attend a funeral in Joplin and Zener maintained an office in Hobbs.
Mr and Mrs Howard Gardner of Cleveland Ohio arrive as house guests of Mr and Mrs Berry Freeman. The Gardners plan to move to California to make their home.
Mr and Mrs H R Beavers spent last weekend in Snyder Texas visiting friends and local acquaintances.
Fort Worth chamber official Harry J. Nunan announced a 30 to 33 person Good Will tour will visit Lovington as the first stop of a two day trip through eastern New Mexico and west central Texas. The group will arrive at 3 10 p m spend 30 minutes meeting local business leaders then depart for Hobbs for dinner and overnight at the Harden Hotel.
The Atlantic Refining Company relocates a new crew of twelve families to Lovington from Portales and Corsicana Texas. They require furnished houses and apartments for housing.
Mrs H F Shanks and her daughter Marion Thompson visited in Seminole Sunday with Mrs Shanks brother V H Glass.
The Mallamara Recreation Club elected officers for the coming year at a recent meeting with Cecil Holeman named president. Weston H Mills as vice president, L J Kelly secretary treasurer, and an extensive slate of committee roles announced along with a building plan to lease land near the Texey New Mexico Pipeline camp. J T Frazier of Lubbock transacted business in Lovington Tuesday.
