Governor Edwin L. Mechem declares June 1954 as Dairy Month in New Mexico. The proclamation highlights health, economic benefits, and the dairy industry's role, with Robert K. Ford directing promotional activities in the state.
Three New Mexico Military Institute cadets died while preparing for the annual graduation ball in Roswell. Fumes from dry ice apparently suffocated them after diving into a pool to start a bubble effect. The victims were Perry Viohoupoulos, Woody Moore, and D. W. Vertress.
U. S. District Judge Waldo Rogers presides over the spring jury trial session in Santa Fe with about 25 criminal and 25 civil cases on the docket. Rogers, sworn in last week as New Mexico's second federal judge, will base in Albuquerque but may hold sessions in Roswell Las Cruces or other towns as needed.
The Lovington Dusters, a mixed race team, host the Clovis Black Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at Duster Field north of the schools. The game starts at 2:30 with free admission. Manager and player Franklin A. Hill leads the team and plans to secure another location and build a ball park soon.
State Police cracked down along U S 66 during Memorial Day week arresting 260 speeders. Capt. R L Scroggins said all pleaded guilty when confronted with radar timings. Offenders were cited at speeds between 70 and 90 mph on the transcontinental highway.
Agriculture Secretary Ezra Benson tells a St. Louis Chamber audience that another increase in farm price support funds is needed next year as surplus stocks mount. He charges the current high level program worsens the surplus and advocates a tougher stance against the system.
Robert Jones, a supporter of Senator McCarthy, says he was offered 25000 dollars by a man he suspects belonged to a Washington liberal group to drop his bid in the June 21 Republican Senate primary in Maine. Jones says he rejected the offer.
L. C. Green, newly appointed Town Magistrate, reported $2,138 in May fines from the town court. He succeeded John W. Green. Revenues included penalties for sewer rules, New Mexico plates, reckless and drunk driving, speeding, resisting arrest, and building code violations.
Adoption papers filed in district court reveal four children to be placed in two families. One Hobbs family to take two siblings, another family to adopt the remaining child. three children originate from a single family.
James R. Garrett 78 of Hobbs died Wednesday evening at his home 705 E Gypsy after a three year illness and a recent stroke. A longtime carpenter, he homesteaded land north of the Old Swimming Hole about fifty years ago. Survived by two sons J L Hobbs and C M Comance Okla two daughters E A Watson Truth or Consequences NM Jr Teague Knowles and E E Tipton Hobbs 18 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 2:30 PM at Church of Christ Tom Wallace officiating. Burial Memorial Park Cemetery Griffin Funeral Home in charge.
District court granted several judgments including a divorce for Nannie Lee Gilmore and restoration of maiden name James. John A. Lamb may obtain a license if he passes the test though underage in New Mexico. Multiple money awards were issued in various civil actions, with amounts ranging from $100 to $1,470 and large mortgage holdings noted. Restraining orders were issued against F R Teague and L S Sprayberry at their wives’ request.
Sumner states he created the Nor Lea Shopper and leased it to Clyde Carson for five years while denying involvement beyond holding the lease. The shopper is mailed with Clyde Carson named as lessee, described as a self styled master printer. Jack Baker, former Lovington Leader advertising salesman, is mentioned as a salesman for a give away sheet.
Jess Benson, caretaker for Lea County Courthouse, reports squirrels brought from Louisiana aid this year's mulberry harvest. Six of nine originals remain, with two raised since arrival. five died due to falls, weather, and cats. The gift from Shreveport aimed to clear starlings from courthouse trees, but starlings lingered until spring.
The opening event is on Sunday June 1 with a parade at 5 p.m. starting at the Central School Building, marching to Main Street and the ballpark. At 7:15 p.m. the first game features the Giants versus the Yankees, followed by the Dodgers against the Cardinals.
The local Lions Club sponsored softball park is ready for the season hosting the softball league and Little League. Vandals damaged the east fence area during a flood, repairs cost about 2000 dollars with part borrowed, leaving rest of fence to be addressed later.
The KLEA broadcasting application to 630 AM sits before the FCC with a grant expected soon. A Lovington Leader special edition is set for June 13 promoting KLEA. Free advertising spots will accompany Leader coverage of the station’s progress. Coverage is projected at about 125 miles in each direction.
In Oxford Maine a town meeting split over reducing the annual appropriation for town officers. One side urged a substantial cut, the other kept the prior level. The compromise approved amount is $3,999.99, down from last year's $4,000.
Sacramento report says City Manager Bartley Cavanaugh announced cuspidors are banned in city buildings due to a labor contract with a janitorial firm. Janitors cannot clean spit rooms, deemed unsanitary and unsightly.
A Tokyo Nippon Times front page editorial charges Gov. Dan Thornton of Colorado and John Fine of Pennsylvania learned little on their Korea fact finding tour. The Seoul papers echoed the critique of Thornton Fine and Gov. Allan Shivers of Texas. Shivers returned home while Thornton and Fine left for the United States. Thornton due back in Denver at week’s end.
The Lea County Electric Co operative will meet Monday June 7 at the Lea Theatre with 9 am registration and 10 am call to order. Agenda includes bylaws amendments to add a director, nominating A B Carpenter of Plains to the board, plus re nomination of four existing directors. Door prizes include a Frigidaire Range and numerous items donated by Lovington merchants and local firms.
A District Court judgment assigns water well priorities to five Hobbs Knowles Area residents after the State Engineer could not rule the matter. Martin Hughes receives three wells with an October 4 1951 filing, Luther Cooper three wells on January 5 1953, Paul Young one well on January 7 1953, Dug Andr us four wells on January 9 1953, and Troy Collier one well on January 9 1953.
Former heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles weighs ten pounds more than expected for the New York title bout with Rocky Marciano set for June 17. He weighed 98 pounds after skipping a workout at Monticello, New York.
The upcoming jury term in Lovington begins June 14 with two damage suits leading the docket. Mrs. Carrie Belle Smith seeks 100000 dollars in a wrongful death claim tied to her late husband William Elbert Smith. The second suit requests 150000 dollars for the death of Finus Garrison.
Ww. H. Findley appeared in Justice Court and pled guilty to failure to yield right of way after a Friday two car crash that damaged both vehicles. He was fined $30 by Justice of Peace John W. Green who noted no insurance on Findley’s car. Emma Wonsch of Lovington drove the other vehicle with her three children. no serious injuries were reported though her car was badly damaged.
Memorial services marked Memorial Day weekend as President Eisenhower urged lasting peace. Services at Arlington and national ceremonies reflected the scale of observances with graves decorated and buglers sounding taps overseas. A UPI survey reported 190 holiday deaths from traffic accidents and other incidents across the United States.
Lovington residents file to bar the proposed paying plan with District Judge John R. Brand disqualified from hearing the petition. Robert C. Dow represents the protesters and a large group of local residents join as plaintiffs. Judge George Harris is expected to preside next week, with potential assignment to the case.
The schedule lists 1954 softball games with double headers on Tuesday and Thursday and single games on Wednesday and Friday. First game starts promptly at 7 30 P M. Second game begins 20 minutes after the first ends but no later than 9 30 P M. The first game may be called at 9 P M if the score is not tied.
