County Hospital Costs Taxpayers Over Fifty-Six Thousand

Records in the County Treasurer's office show Les County Community Hospital has cost taxpayers 56002.36 since opening in November 1949. Treasurer Osborne Fisher cites incomplete hospital ledgers and notes a 3000 dollar monthly county subsidy and taxes covering the shortfall. A fuller report is promised.

Bullet Kills Santa Fe Tot Near Pojoaque

A two and a half year old, Raymond Roybal, died Tuesday near Santa Fe from a gunshot wound at Cuyumungue near Pojoaque while playing with other children. Police identified a .22 caliber rifle believed to belong to Farold Romero as the likely weapon. Romero reportedly remained in serious shock at Espanola Hospital. Raymond was the son of Mr and Mrs Filigenio Roybal.

Wool Growers Attack Plans For Synthetic Wool

Tatum Man Charged With Forgery

George L. Thompson Jr of Tatum faces forgery charges over a check altered from Abilene Bank to San Angelo Bank. The check for 10000 was cashed after deposit in Lea County State Bank Lovington with 600 cash taken, the rest drawn by draft to a Texas bank. He has not been arrested since charges were filed.

Reclassification of Married Men with No Kids in Lea County

Lea County Selective Service director Velma Boland says about 150 married men with no children are moved from 3-A to 1-A. The draft board last week passed on 40 registrants in college, deferring about a third to continue studies. Only two men face August induction, with September expected higher.

Britain hires law expert for oil dispute mission

Britain names Lord Jowitt to head a Tehran mission to resolve the Anglo Iranian oil dispute. The group would meet with Premier Mossadegh and was suggested by W Averell Harriman. The cabinet will decide when talks show reasonable hope for agreement after reviewing a memo from Sir Francis Shepherd.

Former Resident Buried In California

D H Crockett of Lovington returned from attending the funeral of his mother Mrs W R Crockett who died July 12 at age 91. She died at her daughter’s Los Angeles home. Survivors include four sons 27 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Mrs Crockett moved to California after her husband’s death and was a Methodist church member.

San Juan oil men organize at Farmington meeting

Dudley Cornell of Albuquerque was reelected chairman of the San Juan Basin operators committee of the whole during the annual Farmington session. Tom Bolack was named vice chairman and Scott Brown secretary treasurer, with an executive slate including Wilson Hollis Howell Brown Hoy, all of Farmington. About 50 oil and gas men attended with state officials. The group postponed opening an office until financing plans are further investigated.

The Lea County Gospel Singers gathered July 22 at the Apostol Church in Lovington with Bro. Alex Wisnoski opening prayer and C E Silurn closing.
