H. R. Swenson, an inspector for the federal government, visited Lovington on Monday for a routine inspection of the Lea County Jail. He reviewed security and facilities as part of a standard oversight visit by federal officials.
Inspector Swenson filed a report to Sheriff McAdoo in Washington noting ten improvements at the jail. Cleaner condition, new bedding and stainless steel trays, upgraded laundry, revised food service, secured corridors, new refrigeration, inter-communication office, non firing jailer, added bunk capacity, and custody transfer to the town.
The AEC ruled Dr. Robert Oppenheimer should be barred from atomic secrets and his government adviser role ends tomorrow night. Four commissioners backed the decision citing past associations with communists. one dissented, saying there was no proven loyalty breach. Oppenheimer expressed gratitude for the minority view and pledged continued scientific service.
In Eddy County a district case moves to the Supreme Court on July 14 challenging a city drunk driving ordinance and the new state act as unconstitutional. A local attorney argues the law creates injustice by distinguishing between levels of intoxication and cites a Justice Court plea and a two beer case with penalties of $50 and 30 days plus $500 fine.
Joseph D. Nunan Jr., once a top federal tax collector, was found guilty by a federal jury in New York of evading more than $91,000 in his own income tax. The verdict concludes a high profile case against a prominent former official.
The Dodgers were hosted by Lovington National Bank at a Friday night roast on June 25 at the picnic grounds of the Country Club. Members families and bank personnel attended to enjoy the event and homemade ice cream. Managers George Bradshaw and Al Strawn organized the gathering.
O. H. Matney Hobbs was found not guilty in Federal Court in Albuquerque on perjury charges. The acquittal followed his testimony to a federal grand jury concerning a football lottery in Hobbs.
Mrs Eloise Valley Hobbs teacher seeks reinstatement under New Mexico tenure law after a writ of mandamus. She taught at Booker T Washington School for six years in Hobbs. On appeal to the State School Board she received a unanimous judgment. the district court suit by the Hobbs Board was dismissed and noncompliant.
A Phoenix man described as a suspect in the murder of Santa Fe liquor store clerk Andy Adeusakis is jailed in Albuquerque on federal charges for taking a stolen car across state lines. T. M. Moore, 23, waived preliminary hearing, held on 5000 dollar bond with two loaded pistols found in his YMCA room. The FBI will review the case after evidence sent from New Mexico.
H Markleys attended the Clovis service Wednesday for Mrs Gray Reed, aunt to Mrs Markley. Reed died of a heart attack Sunday at the Reed summer home on Red River. A Clo vis resident since 1922 she ran the El Monterrey restaurant for years. She was 58.
A string of July events across New Mexico includes Mescalero Apache fiesta July 1 to 4 with the devil dance, Red River rodeo, Taos parade, Los Lunas American Legion celebration, the Rodeo de Santa Fe July 8 to 11, Cochiti Pueblo Corn Dance July 14, and an all Indian Rodeo July 17 and 18 at Shiprock.

Five divorce suits were filed in district court this week. Names include Dorothy Stella McCann versus Charles E. McCann, Donna Rae Randolph versus Raymond Randolph, Y. H. Hurd versus Leona Hurd, Roger H. J. Igo versus Dorlene Igo, and Marie L. Griffis versus Clifford Griffis.
The Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau brought in another load of Mexican Nationals on Monday evening. A further shipment is expected to arrive next Monday.
Tatum residents will glimpse a new show house in the Bledsoe RE Division. The ranch style home, priced 9600 to 9800, features exposed beams and zoned heating. Glen Veran oversees construction. Bill Shelton handles sales. Marshall Furniture supplies the show house. Open date expected mid July. Leo Jones coordinates furniture selections.
Forty nurses from eighteen New Mexico areas attend summer sessions to meet school nurse certification requirements or refresh knowledge in public health topics. Mrs. Juanita Bush of Lovington is part of the group.
New Mexico maintained a strong growth trend in population and industry with state by state figures from the Pacific Northwest Research Council. The NAM study shows New Mexico added 16,500 manufacturing employees in 1953, with Oregon the only state showing a decline. the report cites gains in 16,300 industries and an $8.4 million investment for the year.
The North Sea County Panel met to form a permanent United Benefit Fund board. C C Yearwood leads the Hobbs panel with a one month term, plus Rev Ed Hamilton Andrew Swarthout Mrs Lucille Lister and Roy Lee Jones. A youth traffic case occurred as lessons were given. The fund prepares bylaws, 24 directors with terms set by lot for 1 2 or 3 years, eight new members yearly, and each civic group will appoint a representative. Monthly financial reports from beneficiary organizations are required. Jess Benson expresses pride as four baby squirrels are born on the courthouse lawn. The newborns are reported to be healthy and their mother squirrel and caretakers expect a smooth recovery for Jess.
A mass meeting at Rock Chapel Hobbs discussed segregation in Hobbs Schools. Rev. Bill Carter moderated, citing a Genesis verse, and group members urged an early meeting with the Hobbs School Board to consider removing compulsory segregation, allowing white and colored children to choose schools.
A district court jury awarded Peggy LaBodie 3800 and Geneze Garrett 2500 in damages from Sacra Bros and Billy Shannon after an accident involving a Sacra Truck driven by Shannon.
Junior Deputies met at 5 30 schedule for drill and regular meeting. Jake Lister resigned as Chief replaced by Rudy Owens Sr Jake will assist when needed. They plan a project for first week in July painting house numbers on curbs under supervision of Rudy Owens Olivarez and Les Villars. Service fee one dollar.
The Giants improved to 7 wins 2 losses after a 9 to 3 victory over the Cardinals with Jimmy Jordan earning the win. For the Cardinals, Ronnie Roy and Mim Owens pitched. In the nightcap the Yankees edged the Dodgers 7 to 6 with Floyd Blackwood starting and relieved by Forrester Smith as Beal and Weaver pitched for the Dodgers.
Five ranchers attended the grasshopper meeting Tuesday in the courthouse basement. They deemed the cost too high for the expected benefits and decided to wait until next year to watch for young grasshoppers to hatch and poison. Attendees included Millard and Scarbauer Eidson, who farms 30 to 40 sections, Kenneth Eakin with 80 sections in the Caprock area near Mallamar, and Mrs. Mason Graham who had few hoppers on her land but joined the discussion.
The courthouse lawn memorial has been enlarged to receive 916 new names of service members who entered the army since 1940 and 1954. Courthouse caretaker Jess Benson says the name plates will be completed within about 30 to 40 names, to be added later.
