A morning crash at Main and B Street in Lovington involved Minnie Teas driving a new 1951 Ford east on B Street and John Lemon Love in a 1948 Chevrolet north on Main. About $700 in damage occurred. Teas had no insurance and no injuries were reported.
Local lore recounts the Lovington National Bank vice president J. W. Smith and Lovington Junior Chamber of Commerce editor Jay M. Steinberg amid the Ugly Man contest. Contestants include a bearded Lions Club entrant, a shopping circular editor, and Butler Sumner, all tied to town events and polio fundraiser efforts.
W. W. Lawrence of Hobbs received 12 water well permits for irrigation in Lea County. The 12 permits, issued Jan 15 1953, come from a stipulated partial judgment linked to a long dispute over 20 applications first denied by the State Engineer in 1949. Wells near Pauls Bar along the Denver City highway were drilled under special district judge permission to save crops from failure.
Three Army Air Force men from Reese Air Base were jailed in Hobbs after a daytime break-in at Leon's Bar. Officers intercepted the trio in Seminole, Texas, and recovered about six cases of liquor valued at 70 dollars per case. Extradition waived. suspects identified as Hougan, De Bord, and Painter.
Eunice judge Faugh Bowden welcomed a grandson named Allen Keith Bowden born December 20 to Mr and Mrs Poke Bowden of Eunice. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Arlie Morrison of Hobbs.
The Lea County Courthouse crowded Monday as bidders from across the county competed for about 150 parcels in a tax sale. B Manley and daughter Jane Adams attended from Long Beach California and Adams of Webbs returned to bid. Owners could redeem sold properties until January 19 1954.
Lovington town trustees relocate from the regular Town Hall meeting room on Love Street to the Fire Hall recreation room adjacent to the Town Hall. The move frees space for town officials.
Union rig builders in the Permian Basin including about 30 from Hobbs returned to work after a December 15 stoppage. A one year contract with contractor-employers was approved by Local 290 Hobbs Local 413 Odessa and Local 457 Brownsfield. The International Oil Workers Union members won a two dollar daily wage hike but cite reduced working time squeezing earnings. crews rise from 26 to 28 dollars and pushers from 28 to 30.
Associate Area Rent Director Charles L. O Neal will be in Hobbs on January 20 and 21 to discuss landlord and tenant problems at 608 North Turner Street. He will also appear in Lovington at City Hall on January 22, 1953 to meet residents.
An explosion at 912 East Skelly Hobbs destroyed east and west walls of the house owned by C. W. Mitchell and occupied by his son C. H. Mitchell. No one was in the residence. Firemen extinguished flames. Cause listed as unknown but suspected gas leak.
Olive Branch Rebekah Lodge of Lovington schedules a program honoring Thomas Wildley founder of Odd Fellowship on the American continent. The tribute will be part of the January 22 regular meeting with Martha Shirey Ravanell Tatum and Ruby Roye named as committee members.

Judge John Green bound Hollis Loyd about 20 and three others over to District Court Saturday for whiskey stolen from a car at Bronco on December 20. Loyd pleaded guilty and was ordered to post a $1,000 bond. Frank Loyd and James Fuller were released. two other Negroes remain held.
Frank John Haber pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge before Judge John Green on Friday. He was fined 100 dollars and surrendered his driver s license.
The United Press reports the ten mile inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue behind the new president with 115 units and 20 000 military participants. A 85 ton atomic cannon and famed units from Korea and World War II will march, as half a million spectators expect to watch despite weather. Herbert Hoover joins the procession behind the president and Truman will attend as a private citizen after the oath.
The Lavington Business and Professional Women's Club turned over a check for $1,224.11 to the Town of Lavington. The amount completes the balance of the Library Fund, from BPW sponsorship days. Mayor Phillip Robinson accepted the gift, presented by Mrs Genieve Arnold.
