Funeral services for Harley H. Meeks 58 of Hobbs were held Saturday at 11:00 in Midland First Christian Church. Meeks died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his sister’s home in Lovington. Surviving wife Silva Bell Williams two sons William Mack and Bobby Dan one daughter Mrs. T. Baxter and a grandson Stephen Meeks. siblings Mrs. Boon Hardin and Mrs. Carl Reeves. parents Mrs. M. A. Tandy. He had moved to Lea County from Midland four years ago and worked as an inspector for the Port of Entry. Burial and pallbearers listed with several nephews and honorary pallbearers noted.

The Lovington American Legion Auxiliary will meet Friday night January 13 at 7 59 p m in the home of Mrs V G Jordan The meeting location is two blocks north of the Artesia highway at Municipal Park All members are urged to attend.
The Lea County Farm Bureau and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a regular meeting Thursday January 12 at 7 00 PM in the basement of the Methodist Church. Dinner served by the Associated Women for 1.00 per plate. Members urged to attend with guests. several guest speakers will be present.
T M Edwards was fined 100 dollars and 5 dollars costs for reckless driving on January 5. Emma Lou Bryant paid a 10 dollar fine for disturbing the peace in municipal court. Glenn D Berryhill was fined 15 dollars on January 9 for disturbing the peace.
The Lovington B squad avenged an earlier defeat by Eunice Tuesday night winning 36 to 30. Black led Lovington with 14 points before fouling out in the middle of the second half as coach Virgil Boteler praised the effort but urged improved free throw shooting. The game tied 7-6 first quarter, Lovington led 15-7 at halftime, and 29-25 after three periods. Still, Lovington stored no births or deaths for 1950 as press time reports.

Lovington Wildcats lose a close 36 to 37 decision to Eunice Red Birds in a hard fought game. Despite 35 fouls, both sides played cleanly with Eunice pulling away in the final period to hand Lovington their first loss of the season.
Artesia business news notes Paul Bush manager of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. of Artesia pleaded not guilty to embezzlement charges filed in Artesia justice of the peace court. He posted $2000 bond awaiting a preliminary hearing before J. D. Josey.
Occupation licenses for businesses operating outside village town or city corporate limits in Lea County are due and payable at the County Clerk's office in Lovington.
The Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church met on Monday night. Sunday School superintendent Howard Grandon reported 242 present at Sunday School on January 8.
Reverend and Mrs. C. F. Sanders traveled from Lovington to Clovis on Sunday to meet Nazarene District Superintendent Rev. R. C. Gunstream of Albuquerque. Mrs. Sanders returned to Lovington while the pastors proceeded to Kansas City for a General Church School Board Meeting. Sanders plans to return to Lovington Saturday.
Veterans face a tariff trap as community property halves their auto tax deduction. Mike Gallegos notes a wife’s one half remains taxable, despite a court ruling and a 1949 constitutional amendment to extend exemptions. The legislature has not enacted the needed law, so the veteran’s $2,000 property tax break remains the same unless appraisal reaches $4,000 or more.
Dr James R Scott state health director says the Attorney General advised the law places the duty of removing dead animals on public roads with the state police. He notes he informed State Police Chief Hubert Beasley of this responsibility.
Visiting pastor Rev. Roy Davis of Hobbs led the Sunday morning worship at First Christian Church on January 8. He will continue services until a resident minister is provided in Lovington. A prayer meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 pm. Sunday School drew 45 attendees last Sunday.
Rancher's Supply began construction this week on a new service building for tractors and farm implements. Located south of the main building, the dealer for Allis Chalmers expands facilities to add a service department and install new equipment. The shop aims to be ready around January 1.
Municipal Water and Sewer System manager Joe Smith announces this month's bill covers five weeks due to a new metering and billing schedule. Meter readings shift to the 10th with bills sent on the 25th, delinquency not until the 10th of the following month.
The Camera Club gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ritchey home on Monday at 7 30 for a lecture on night photography. Members and guests discussed outdoor night scene exposures indoor lighting for portraits and planned an exhibition of member prints and a round table discussion.
John Campbell returns from a business trip to Amarillo Abilene and Quanah Texas where he conducted business for Rancher's Supply.
Four Lovington students Doris McClish Margie Sturlock David Hester and Jerry Griffin were chosen for the All State Band by a band directors panel. Durwood Crain Lovington Band Director joins them for a clinic in Albuquerque January 20 21 and the All State Band concert January 21.
Lovington Wildcats defeated Jal 57 to 24 with ten players seeing action. Ross Black led Lovington with 13 points, Bob Hunt added 10, while the Wildcats built early leads 12 to 2 after the first quarter and extended to 42 to 15 by the third period.
Lovington B squad dominated Jal with an 11 6 first quarter, 19 13 at half, and final 38 30 win. Black led scoring with 24 points while sparking the team and positioning to follow older brother Ross into senior play.
