Lea County's new sheriff Charlie O Trimble of Hobbs outlines changes to care for juvenile girls and inmates. He details refurbishing the old jail blocks, allocating 533 for upstairs juvenile facilities, plans to add more beds, and joint jail arrangements with Hobbs.
Burness Neal a 20-year-old Carlsbad man pleaded guilty to murdering Clara Gallemore a 32 year old taxi driver found dead in her car in Carlsbad last week Neal admitted killing her to take her money and cab for a trip to Houston Texas He was arrested last Saturday and arraigned today after being returned from an out of town jail.
Jimmy Rice son of Mr and Mrs Rice was taken to Lubbock Memorial Hospital after an illness and was expected to avoid surgery.
Secretary of State Acheson says he is willing to meet with Senator Taft and other Republicans to discuss a world program but has no concrete meeting plans. He warns against Red China in Korea and urges vigorous UN backing, while Eisenhower tours Europe building anti communism defenses.
A four year old boy Manuel Eugene Martinez was killed instantly when hit by a school bus driven by Presciliano Lucero of Buena Vista near Mora New Mexico. The accident occurred as the child walked along a roadway.
Mr and Mrs John Catchings of Humble City returned from a 33 day vacation visiting Houston Rockwall and other Texas cities. They spent the Christmas holidays in Houston.
Three members Hobby Gann Kyle Taylor and John Campbell filed for re election to the Lovington Board of Education. Election day is Tuesday February 6 1951 with polls from 8 am to 6 pm in the Gymnasium Building. Gann served twelve years Taylor three Campbell one. Citizens urged continued progress and stable leadership for the Lovington schools.
The Air Force will re examine former bases in New Mexico including Clovis Hobbs Carlsbad and Deming for potential reactivation. Senator Dennis Chavez says a sincere re evaluation will be conducted though outcome unclear.
Justice of the Peace docket at Lovington records multiple December cases. Leon Barker faced reckless driving and no license with a $100 fine and jail. Jan 9 payment and release followed. Hugh Kammins charged December 13 with unlicensed operation and assaulting an officer. 60 days in county jail. James Baden fined for drunkenness and costs. Delbert Hardin fined and jailed for wrong-way driving. Justo Meneates jailed after drunk and disorderly conduct fine. Other entries include William Ferguson for being drunk on Highway and Paul McHugh for drunkenness with jail.
Bones found in a Sicily Island gravel pit Louisiana may indicate human presence in North America 50 000 years ago. Researchers study the specimens to determine if they belong to humans. If confirmed it could upend current views on human origins and migration from Europe or the Mediterranean.
The New Mexico Wool Growers Association will hold its 48th meeting and 12th annual wool show and school in Albuquerque on February 6 7 and 8.
John L. Lewis urged the government to abandon wage and price controls. He told the Wage Stabilization Board that the price structure is uncontrollable and pressed for raises for 450,000 United Mine Workers. He warned against “putting the American economy in irons” and favored normal bargaining methods.
F. W. Jenkins announced the sale of his business to Harry Arledge Floy Tatum and Mrs. Arledge. He will move stock from the old Lovington Auto Co. building to the Kirksey Creamer site and plans to hand over operations on January 16. Jenkins will stay in Lovington about three weeks to assist before departing. Floy Tatum runs Vanity Beauty Shop and the Arledges previously operated a Lovington dress shop.
John D. Stanley of Denver says he cannot get angry over the theft of his car. Police recovered the vehicle after an hour and a half, noting it had just been tuned up. A mechanic who tried to collect for the job mistook Stanley’s car for another parked outside the garage.
Ardie Nowell owner of Nowell Drug and a Lions Club member is critically ill at St. Mary's Hospital Roswell after a stomach operation on Monday. He had a 50-50 chance to live at Wednesday noon.
A foreign diplomatic official estimates Russia has 24 to 30 atomic bombs and could reach 60 by year end. He notes Russia now makes about two bombs monthly and warns the United States has a larger but riskier stockpile.
The Defense Department denied a Chicago Daily News syndicate report that General MacArthur recommended withdrawing all UN forces from Korea. It stated it had not received any such recommendation from MacArthur in Tokyo.
Lovington chief of police Joe Black is reported ill at his home. The brief notice provides no further details on his condition or expected return to duty.
In a New York perjury trial, former Soviet agent Elizabeth Bentley testified against William Remington, claiming he lied about being a Communist. Bentley said the grand jury foreman John Bruniini helped write a book naming Remington as a Red, while also noting attorney Thomas Donegan once represented her and advised her to seek another attorney years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Villers of Lovington announce their son Pfc. Donald Villers of the 1st Marine Division in Korea has been wounded and sent to U S Navy Hospital Oakland California. He was hit in the right elbow November 28 and nerve damage will require an operation after removal of the bullet. The family previously lived in Albion Illinois and moved to Lovington in August. He enlisted in the Marines at Evansville Indiana.
In Cincinnati Carl Bostrom president of the Chicago Board of Trade warned the Ohio Grain Mill and Feed Dealers Association that farm price controls would cause black markets and reduced production. He said such rigid controls would cripple the nation’s ability to supply military and civilian goods.
The Rural Electrification Administration approved a five million, 322 thousand dollar loan package for cooperatives in Colorado, Iowa, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. Lea County REA in Lovington received 1.425 million dollars to fund 400 miles of distribution lines a 3500 HP dual fuel diesel generator and a two way radio system benefiting 400 new consumers.
In Lovington Justice Court during December attachments and garnishments were filed. Lillie G Fairweather pursued an attachment against Doyle Shannon for 78.85. Do's Case garnished Parker Drilling Co for 58.85. Clarene Vinson filed garnishments against Daughn Tuker and Harold Campbell for 33.71 and 25.17, with Jeffries Eaves Inc. named as garnishee.
In Keremeos British Columbia the group Children of Light led by 60 year old Agnes Grace Carlson ends a 16 day doomsday vigil. The cultists filed out into the cold after failing to receive a message from the Lord amid interruptions and outside interference.
Three new instructors begin in Lovington as of next week. Miss Jean Whitfield replaces first grade teacher Marsdell White who resigned to marry. Mrs. Jean Haugen replaces Julia Edwards who also resigned to marry. Bill Hendricks will take over as band instructor from Durwood Crain who has been recalled to the Navy. Hendricks previously played with a symphony orchestra.
Barnvelee Johnson sues John A. Johnson for divorce and custody of a minor child filed January 5. Mattie Pearl Marker sues Angus B. Marker seeking alternate custody to the parties for six months.
