Roosevelt County Cotton Growers Seek Court Over Quotas

Roosevelt county cotton farmers voted Friday to take their quota dispute to court if needed. They agreed to fund the effort with 20 cents per quota acre. The county has a 9 percent 1948 crop quota for 1950 and listed specific acreage and quota figures for Causey and another farm. The association plans to file an injunction if the state Marketing Production Association delays or ignores requests for fair quotas at hearings.

Lovington Chamber of Commerce plans its annual membership drive on Tuesday December 17 with a goal of signing up every Lovington business and inviting non business citizens to join. The group aims for 100 percent plus and budgets 7200 dollars for 195 with a folder and extra office help as must. A customer at Hunt's De Luxe Laundry crashed into the building Tuesday morning breaking the large plate glass window. Brake failure on the pickup involved in the crash was responsible for the accident.

City Clerk records show Lovington issued building permits in 1948 totaling 954 025 for new construction remodeling and additions. Largest permit went to Lembke Construction Company for a new elementary school at 172 755, followed by a 70 000 permit for a new Baptist church.

Lovington Considers Extensions to Water and Sewer Lines

Lovington City Council reviewed preliminary plans for water and sewer extensions with engineer H N Roberts. Estimated costs, planned extra lines, and two week window to advertise bids were discussed. Also, Eva Vosburg renewed license appeal for Cub's Place, council upheld prior ruling pending demonstrated improvements. Albert K. Mitchell Named Man of the Year in Livestock

Albert K. Mitchell of Albert New Mexico is honored as Man of the Year in livestock circles. The 55-year-old widower with three children manages a Hard ing County ranch started by his father in 1895, now spanning 185000 acres with over 2000 head of registered cattle. He is a noted Hereford breeder active in state and national ranch organizations and has worked on hoof and mouth disease solutions in Mexico. Mitchell, a prominent Republican, previously sought the governor and Senate seats and is widely known in Lea County.
