Minton Named Scout Commissioner for Lovington

Dr. W. L. Minton was appointed Scout Commissioner for Lovington to assist and supervise Troops 89 and 44 and Cub Pack 9. Draft Calls 16 More Boys for Induction

Sixteen youths have been called for induction on January 4 including Don Yarbro Charles Robinson Dan Brady from Lovington and others from Hobbs Jal Fort Stockton Sweetwater Sun Valley Oil Center and Ta Tum. They will report to El Paso on January 5. Noble Nowlan requested a transfer since he is far from Lea County.

City issues 1950 building permits total near million

City Clerk Carl Carr reports 1950 building permits totaled 897 340 dollars, six percent under 1949’s record 954 025. Residential work dominated the year while 1949’s nonresidential activity included the High School Gymnasium and First Baptist Church. The REA project permit was expected to push 1950 over 1 million.

Cross Complaint Filed To Protect Second Mortgage In Hobbs

Cecil A Goodwin of Tatum through A M Rose of Hobbs filed an answer in a suit by H A Kiker of Santa Fe against former Hobbs mayor Paul Heard. The case centers on a Flagg Inn Courts property mortgage third in line behind Lea County State Bank and Goodwin. The bank holds a first mortgage of 10 500 and attached property for 1 500 plus costs. Boles Orphan's Home also has a suit and attachment for 1 000 plus costs and interests. Goodwin loaned Heard 13 500 on April 10 1950 at 8 percent, with a 90 day due date, secured by a mortgage on Lots 13 14 15 16 in Block 8 Original Hobbs. Several potential buyers are named including Bill Clark Roy S Davis J E Box and Melvin Neal. The complaint seeks sale of the property and costs to be paid. if not paid within 60 days sale to satisfy the claim. Lea County State Bank awaits foreclosure pending sale. Riker represented Heard in prior civil and criminal matters related to falsified records. The note was signed by Heard s wife and mother Mrs Allie Heard and Mrs Geneva.

Graveside Rites Held for Elwanda Sue Rountree

Infant Elwanda Sue Rountree, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Rountree of Lovington, died shortly after birth and was laid to rest at Lovington Cemetery. Rev. L W Hardcastle led services at First Baptist Church with Mrs. Jack Jackson providing accordion music. Smith-Yarbro Funeral Home arranged interment.
