Edwin L. Mechem will be sworn in Monday as the 15th Governor of New Mexico. The Las Cruces attorney, 38, will take the oath from Chief Justice Eugene D. Lujan at noon in the Capitol House of Representatives, with an overflow crowd and state wide radio broadcast. The day includes an open reception, a ball at La Fonda, and the Grand March, before he and his wife move into the Governor's Mansion early next year.

Christmas Day Meals at County Jail Bring Seasonal Treats

District Court Set to Open January 8 With Judge Harris

Lovington Girl Injured and Cousin Dies in Ranch Accident
Shirley Beeman, 15, of Lovington, was released from Lovington Hospital after injuries from a horse accident on her grandfather's Portales ranch. Her cousin, also riding, was critically injured and died about 30 minutes later. Both are grandchildren of rancher Frank Beeman. A doctor treated Shirley, who was later brought to Lovington. Reports say the horse stepped on the deceased girl's abdomen.
