Long history of Lovington’s growth shown through 1914 to 1955 figures. Enrollment rises from 150 pupils in 1914 to 3700 in 1955 with ADA climbing to 3025. Building permits, meters, telephones, and bank clearings surge. housing units nearly quadruple since 1950.
City of Lovington reports January totals with general fund income of 21 135 57 and expenditures 18 288 98 while the utility fund receipts reach 15 946 38 with major costs including salaries and system services. Bank balances are listed across multiple funds in Lea County and Lovington banks.
Billy Earl Walker 23 of 812 S. Dal Paso Hobbs is held on 500 bond pending a preliminary hearing on assault with a deadly weapon. The charge filed by Maxine McClain Monday night before Justice Tom Flan. Walker pleaded not guilty at arraignment before Judge Finn. hearing date not set.
State oil and gas lease sale in Santa Fe netted $610672 with Reese Cleveland of Hobbs posting the top bid of $110000 for 266.5 acres in Lea County. Land Commissioner F S Walker notes the bid equates to about $412 per acre.
Lea County farmers must repay warehouse stored grain loans by March 31 1956 or risk title vesting in the Commodity Credit Corporation after March 21. The 1955 Lea County totals include 249 warehouse loans totaling 355654.02 dollars and two farm stored loans totaling 1193.52 dollars with 20,861,167 pounds loaned versus 22,654,892 in 1954.
Fort Worth judge jailed Laredo publisher William Prescott Allen for contempt after he refused to reveal the source of information for editorials about gambling and protection payoffs. Allen, invoking the fifth amendment, faced a $100 fine. A Hobbs man, 28, was held on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and indecent exposure after officers identified him at a theatre.
Southwestern Builders at 1209 West Jackson secures permit for a 26 by 40 residence with five rooms and cost of 6000 dollars. Wayne TV applies for a 12 by 20 frame ad dition to a commercial building on North Main Street.
Hobbs County Commissioner J R Wycoff says he was told by Eber McKinley of the state highway commission that the proposed four lane nine mile road from Hobbs north on 18 is not ready for publicity due to unavailable funds. Wycoff favors four lanes overall Jal to Tatum and sees possible action next year. County planning meeting notes omit mention of the plan. A D Sawyer elected committee chair replacing Jack Maddux.
A running faucet flooded a three story industrial building in New Bedford causing about 4000 gallons of water to pour through the structure and inflict $40000 in damage. A UP report notes no injuries were reported.
Lovington attorney W. Sr. (Bill) Martin Jr announces candidacy for the Probate Judge position. He is married with three children, Shelby Lynn and Jolee, and lists membership in New Mexico and Mississippi Bar Associations. He is active in the Methodist Church Kiwanis Club and local civic projects.
Levi George Griggs aged 29 of 1411 East Skelly Hobbs is held on $2,500 bond pending a preliminary hearing on assault with intent to rape and drunkenness. Griggs is accused of attempting criminal assault on a Hobbs woman Tuesday night. A warrant was issued by Judge Tom Finn and he remained jailed in default after arraignment. Police added the drunk charge when Griggs became uncooperative en route to the city jail.
District Judge C Roy Anderson presided in Lovington as James McDowell Mathews 37 Hobbs was given one to five years for taking a suitcase with a Westinghouse radio and jewelry from Corrence Foy. William L McDonald 45 Hobbs pleaded guilty to grand larceny and received one to five years. Lokce Dennis Hilliard 23 Hobbs pleaded guilty to two counts of forgery and got one to five years for stealing and forging checks for 35.00 and 40.50.
