Hobbs Segregationists Mull Martial Law At Church Meeting

Carter and a 10 member committee at Rock Chapel Baptist Church discussed contacting Governor Mechem to declare martial law in Hobbs. He claimed police and district attorney actions threaten segregation supporters and urged preparations to protect themselves.

Elderly Hobbs Man Shot. Girlfriend Held on Suspected Murder

An elderly Hobbs man, Hubert Lee, 67, was shot fatally Friday night. His girlfriend, Miss Emma Hicks, 47, is in city jail on suspicion of murder. Police found the body at his home and noted prior trouble between them as deputies investigate the case.

Last Rites Held For J A Woodward At Lovington

Funeral services for J A Paul Woodward were conducted at the Smith Yarbro chapel with Rev Vernon Meeks officiating. The Lovington resident a retired rancher and mail carrier born January 11 1865 in Ball Prairie Texas died after a stroke at 401 North 9th Street. He married Eva McKeen in 1893 and had one son and four daughters with 15 grandchildren 31 great grandchildren and other relatives surviving. Interment followed at Lovington Cemetery with grandsons as pallbearers.

Andrews Cancels Football Game With Eagles

Supt. Charles Mills of the Hobbs school system says the Andrews Texas school has canceled a football contract with Hobbs due to a desegregation order. He notes talks with Ker mit and Monahans officials, but expects Hobbs to play these schools this year.

New Building Permits Issued in Eunice

Eunice Town Clerk releases two building permits. Ellis Rowland plans a 42 by 60 foot cement block drive in restaurant on No Main Street at an estimated cost of 15000 dollars. Skelly Oil Co to erect a 48 by 28 foot cement block service station on Texas Avenue at an estimated cost of 10000 dollars.

Hubert Corzine arrived in Lay ington to finalize arrangements for the last open police position. He has worked with an industrial firm in Carlsbad and brings prior law enforcement experience, according to Police Chief C. D. Stout.

Eunice Mayor Earl Fletcher is reported improving at Lea General Hospital after a heart attack. He has been hospitalized for two weeks while under care.

Mayor Carter cautioned over potential trouble from local group

District Attorney Patrick Hanagan summoned Hobbs Segregation Committee members led by Pastor Carter to his office to review school attendance laws and enforcement roles. He warned Carter of responsibility for any resulting trouble and asked the group to proceed under lawful guidance. A tense exchange followed as petitions were refused and officers listened.

Mrs Halsey Curtiss Taken By Death

Mrs Halsey Lorcan Curtiss died at her Hobbs home 514 West Byars Wednesday night at 10 20. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 PM Griffin Funeral Home with Reverend Truett Allen officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Haven. Open House At Lovington Schools Postponed

The Lovington school open house scheduled for Sunday Sept 5 is postponed due to the vocal music building not yet complete. Other new high school units are occupied and ready for opening. A new open house date will be announced later and public visitation urged.

Mr and Mrs Lyle Gholson and family of Hobbs visited Judge George Harris in Albuquerque this weekend and reported he is doing nicely with improved health. Harris serves the Fifth Judicial District and holds court in Roswell Lovington and Carlsbad.

The New Mexico highway commission opened bids on nine projects. Low bids include Wylie Brothers Contracting Co. for Saunders Oil Field Road at 302000 dollars and D D Skousen and son for Hobbs Lovington sealing bid at 57000 dollars. Former Lea Countian Killed In Wreck

Murrell Woltman 50 of Bovina Texas and Peggy Hardage about 17 of Farwell Texas died in a two car collision on U S Highway three miles east of the Texas New Mexico border. Lavodya Billington about 17 from Farwell was critically injured. Woltman formerly lived in Humble City and ran a dairy.

Woman Dies In Auto Wreck Near Hobbs Texas

Mrs. Ruby Roberts 32 of 1204 Starling Dr died after a weekend car crash between Hobbs and the state line. Investigators said she lost control on a curve near Tip's Bar, the car left the road, hit a guard post, rolled twice, and she died on arrival at the hospital. Survived by husband Harlen and two daughters Peggy and Linda. Body at Green Chapel as arrangements proceed.

Three Killed In Car Crash Near Newman New Mexico

A collision between a car and an Army truck near Newman New Mexico Friday night killed three people from El Paso, William C Snow 32 Myron S Prager 42 and Rosa Prager 46. Cpl Antonio Montanio 19 of Socorro NM is near death at Ft Bliss Hospital. State police say the car driver, blinded by another approaching car, rammed the truck which carried a cannon.

Child survives 30-foot fall into recent soil bed

A 20 month old girl Candace Cronan escaped injury after tumbling 30 feet and landing in a freshly spaded flower bed in New Haven Connecticut. The flower bed was prepared only hours earlier shielding her from serious harm.
