Dorothy Osburn named Miss Lovington at the Water Carnival beauty contest held Friday night at the Country Club pool. Nella Frier and Lela Ponder placed second and third. Numerous contestants from local shops and sponsors modeled in a fashion show with 20 models presented over the pool. Judges included Hobbs city officials and several local merchants.

Sheriff Jewell McAdoo appoints L N and Mrs. L N Yantis as Lea County jailors and assistants at the new Hobbs jail. They replace Mr. and Mrs. Rube Long and will receive 275 dollars and 100 dollars monthly respectively with living quarters and meals. The Longs moved to Hobbs, and the Hobbs City Commission considers a successor while Mrs. Yantis is connected to the Owens jewelry store in Lovington.

DWI Turns Flip Before Haley Chase Ends in Demolition
Joe Grange was arrested Saturday on driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest charges. He pled guilty before Justice of Peace John W. Green, was fined 125 dollars and sentenced to 15 days in jail. State Patrolman Otis Haley chased Grange for eight miles at high speed as the 1949 Chevrolet rolled over. two Mexican national passengers were fined 25 dollars each for riding with a drunk driver.

George Franklin Isaacs 91 died Thursday at his son Ben J. Isaacs ranch 6.5 miles north of Hobbs after a two week illness. Born March 21 1862 in McKee Kentucky he came to Lea county in 1915 and ranched until retirement ten years ago. Surviving wife and 4 daughters 5 sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral 2:30 pm Saturday at Green Chapel Hobbs with Rev. Bill Carter officiating. Burial Lovington cemetery.

First General Faculty Meeting Scheduled for August 26
The Lovington school system opens 1953-54 with a Wednesday morning faculty meeting at 9:00 at the new Llano school. Supt H C Pannell will give the welcome and introduce groups including Lovington Board of Education, Citizens School Lay Committee, New Teacher Induction Committee, and Local Education Association president. Additional talks will feature church, chamber of commerce, mayor, and CPAC representatives. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Subsequent days cover building, group, and department meetings. Classes start August 31 with a full day. students not registered by August 29 must wait until September 1 for enrollment.

The Lovington Board of Education invites the public to tour the new Llano elementary on Sunday from 3 to 5 PM. Ronnie Gene Clapper, six weeks old, was found suffocated in bed with his parents at the Bowen Trailer Courts. Deputy James Robinson investigated. an inquest by Justice of the Peace John W. Green concluded death by suffocation. The infant was buried in Hominy Oklahoma.

Roswell DA Pat Hannagan, visiting Hobbs, coordinates preliminary proceedings and plans to arraign up to 13 county jail inmates. Harrison and Hedge face charges for breaking and entering the Sweet Shop at Tatum last April. Five inmates were sent to the state penitentiary after a jail disturbance. remaining prisoners include Harvey Wise, W D Newnton, Earl Israel, and J F Crow.
