Traffic statistics show Lea County had six motor vehicle deaths through August 1 this year. In 1953 the county logged 24 deaths for the year, 15 by August 1. Statewide deaths reach 191 so far, with 416 total last year. Officials credit a broader traffic safety program for the decline.

Losses are blamed on spring floods hail and drought while farmers and ESC representatives measured plots with 100 foot steel tapes. Wayne Jones Moved to El Paso Hospital After Collapse
Wayne Jones owner of Jones Hardware in Lovington has been moved to an El Paso hospital with a brain tumor. He was found unconscious in his store Wednesday afternoon and rushed to Hobbs County Hospital. Jones, 26, is president of the local Junior Chamber of Commerce and active in civic projects. his parents Mr and Mrs J D Jones are at his bedside.

Baptists Back Supreme Court Desegregation Order
State Baptist leaders disavow support for a Hobbs segregationist group opposing desegregation. Harry Stagg notes the Southern Baptist Convention recently endorsed the court order. Medlin Remains Buried Here After Long Illness
John Hall Medlin 79 longtime Jal resident and Lea County rancher died after a two year illness in Winkler County Hospital. His remains return to Lovington for burial in Lovington Cemetery. Born March 4 1875 in Burnet County Texas he moved to Oklahoma as a youth and married Gertrude Jones in 1901. The Medlins settled in Lea County in 1914 later moving to Kermit in 1952. Survived by widow four daughters two sons three sisters two brothers 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

The Lea County Fair in Lovington September 16 17 18 promises a larger, more varied program with top junior livestock and junior girls client award trips to a major livestock show funded by the fair board.
